For whatever reason, when I pick up my Samsung Galaxy M 11 phone after a period of non-usage, the supposedly locked phone rather often immediately switches to camera feature (bypassing the prompt for 4-digit password to unlock).

How do I remedy this?

In settings go to lock screen and turn off shortcuts.  You can turn off both left and right or individual shortcuts as you like.  That might sort it.

If this isn't right it's close to it.

Phone has a shortcut on the lockscreen that gets activated is my guess.

The program is designed that way so that the user can quickly access the camera function without having to fumble with the passcode. You might just miss that once in a lifetime shot otherwise. The rest of the phone functions remain locked.

As far as I know there is no override. Yes I know the feeling, it sometimes catches me out as well. ????

I did as you said, and turned off shortcuts.  I strongly suspect this will remedy the issue.  Appreciated.

Hope it's fixed now?  If not; under the Shortcuts menu for 'left' and 'right' shortcuts, you can set which Apps will work even when the phone is locked.

- Remove the camera app from tbis feature.
