BANGKOK (NNT) - The Democrat Party is proposing changes to the protocols and requirements for sentence reduction and royal pardon among inmates. The party is set to submit a motion on this matter to the parliament next week.

The Democrat Party said it is pushing for changes to the sentence reduction and royal pardon criteria and process among convicted inmates of corruption cases, following public criticism against the current scheme.

The party spokesman Ramet Rattanachaweng said the party will be filing for a motion at the parliament on the amendment to the Corrections Act next week, where it will also be presenting its amended draft.

The new draft proposed by the Democrat Party will involve changes to Corrections Committee to promote transparency, with committee members to be selected in a similar fashion as independent organizations.

The party says the committee, which oversees inmates’ petitions for sentence reduction and royal pardon, will need to work more carefully, especially on corruption cases.

The Democrat Party is also proposing for all petitions to receive another review by the court, with a condition that half of the original sentence has been served.

Mr. Ramet said the judiciary’s involvement would present the best way to process pardon petitions, adding that the Minister of Justice already has the authoritative power within his own ministry.
