Nobody don't have real data yet from omicron! All is speculation! They find out that 4 weeks ago! Mild symptoms yes because most people is vaxxed already! And they still get omicron, even normal mask's don't help almost nothing. They want people start to use FFP2 mask's!

There is a paper out from Hong Kong stating Omicron virus  multiplies 70x faster in the bronchial tubes than earlier strains (Delta), but not as fast deep in the lungs. This goes towards why it is more transmissible, but less pathological. Mentioned here...

A possible local infection..............

Thailand confirms 63 cases of Omicron including possibly its first local infection case found in a Thai woman. The rest were all imported, according to Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul on Monday.

63 can turn into quite a lot in a short amount of time.

If the infection rate follows the same curve as here in Denmark or UK, Thailand will have 20000+ omicron cases within two weeks.

Will the official statistics show that?

Probably not, because of lack of PCR testing.

So maybe better to monitor the hospital statistics instead?

That study appears to find nothing with little data....

Yes, the Uni did a press release on that also, its encouraging news

"the Omicron variant replicated less efficiently (more than 10 times lower) in the human lung tissue than the original SARS-CoV-2 virus, which may suggest lower severity of disease."

https://www.med.hku.hk/en/news/press/20211215-omicron-sars-cov-2-infection

However they also say:

‘It is important to note that the severity of disease in humans is not determined only by virus replication but also by the host immune response to the infection, which may lead to dysregulation of the innate immune system, i.e. “cytokine storm”,’ said Dr Chan. ‘It is also noted that, by infecting many more people, a very infectious virus may cause more severe disease and death even though the virus itself may be less pathogenic. Therefore, taken together with our recent studies showing that the Omicron variant can partially escape immunity from vaccines and past infection, the overall threat from Omicron variant is likely to be very significant.’

I hope I'm wrong, but I can see Thailand following the example of the Netherlands and Austria and bringing back lockdowns and school closures in the New Year, as Omicron infections inevitably rise ????

I hope you're wrong too! This Omicron though seems to rapidly rise but then peaks quickly at least that's what happened in SA, lets hope that quick decrease also happens here here. Following the UK and Denmark over the next couple of weeks should tell us more. Daily fluctuations in numbers currently mean nothing.

By letting in travellers from the UK and other countries where omicron is now widespread without full quarantine, they are pretty much guaranteeing they will be heading back to 20k cases a day and lockdowns by the end of January.  It seems crazy to block travellers from African countries which have far less omicron cases than the UK but I guess it is, as always with Thais, all about the money.

Thailand’s first local transmission of the Omicron variant was reported today by public health officials. The confirmed case comes as the government considers cancelling the Test & Go quarantine exemption scheme due to increasing reports of Omicron cases involving those arriving in Thailand from overseas. So far, health officials have reported more than 60 imported Omicron cases.

The first local infection is a woman who contracted the virus from her husband who had travelled from Nigeria. The man had returned home on November 26 and tested negative on arrival in an RT-PCR test. He had entered under the “sandbox” scheme and stayed at an approved hotel, but the Department of Disease Control did not specify which province.

Moderna says booster dose of its COVID-19 vaccine appears protective vs. Omicron

Dec 20 (Reuters) - Moderna Inc (MRNA.O) said on Monday that a booster dose of its COVID-19 vaccine appeared to be protective against the fast-spreading Omicron variant in laboratory testing and that the current version of the vaccine would continue to be Moderna’s "first line of defense against Omicron."

Thai officials to review list of low risk countries, possibly ban travellers from high risk

In addition to discussing whether to cancel the Test & Go quarantine exemption scheme due to the uptick in Omicron cases, the Thai government will also review its list of countries considered to be at low risk for Covid-19 and consider whether to ban travellers from high risk countries.

As i do believe that a country as Thailand will be less hit by the virus due to wheater conditions and less fysical contact, im realy curious what Omicron will do.

I believe Thailand will be less hit because of the aversion to testing.

That's not sounding very good or even well thought out. If they do that then they just might as well shuttered the country, kill of tourism and prepare for a siege from the protestors.

The daughters school is still closed.  Been doing On-line schooling for this entire term and the prior term as well.  It will be a full year of no in person school come March 1st.  Yet they still insist on us paying for new uniforms when the others were never worn one day....Omicron is the Oh My God virus, like in why the hell, or Oh My God, here the F we go again.....

That's awful. My son went back for 3 weeks, then back to online as one pupil tested positive. It's the Christmas holiday now but I'm not optimistic about the new term in January.

Coming soon is a bit optimistic, don't you mean just arrived at a place near you ?

Not quite a jet like certain term we don't use for fear of it not being called exponential, but it has increased quite a fair amount in just 3 days.
