Thailand on Thursday (December 23) reported 2,940 new COVID-19 cases, 2,798 recoveries and 30 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

▶︎ Infections outside prisons: 2,887. Prisons: 53

▶︎ Recoveries: 2,798

▶︎ Total infections since April 1: 2,173,138

▶︎ Total recoveries since April 1: 2,114,760

Thursday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 2,202,001 with 21,501 deaths.

The news comes as The National Vaccine Institute has approved a fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccine to boost immunity among specific groups.

According to Dr Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the Department of Disease Control (DDC), the latest meeting Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice (ACIP) initially approved a fourth round of vaccinations for medical personnel and frontline staff, patients with chronic illnesses and low immunity, and people who have had their third dose for more than three months.

Dr. Opas said people who receive the first two doses of an inactivated virus vaccine, followed by the third dose of a viral vector type vaccine, are advised to get an mRNA jab for their fourth shot.

There's a few million waiting for that now including a huge proportion in Phuket. Seeing as Phuket is still open for the sandbox it seems this would be a priority here.

The number of Covid-19 cases crossed 14.65 million across Southeast Asia, with 24,932 new cases reported on Wednesday (December 22). New deaths are at 441, bringing accumulated Covid-19 deaths in Asean to 301,268.

Wish we knew why Vietnam was the outlier in covid cases.  What is happening there and not elsewhere.

Looks like Chonburi is having ups and downs in their stats. Wonder if it's locals or travelers causing the bumps upward.

Well like Thailand perhaps but at different times. Both got through last year with barely a scratch. Thailand has had one big Delta wave this year starting in April tapering currently. Vietnam had one big outbreak starting in about July not getting to Thai numbers despite a bigger population. It went down much quicker to a similar level to Thailand now, but has shot back up again quite quickly. Their vaccination overall number is about 125 million so on about a par with here per capita. Does this mean a new wave should be expected here shortly? I wouldn't bet against it.

Maybe testing, Worldometers shows roughly 3 times tests to Thailand per capita but then deaths are lot higher, which could be down to many reasons, poorer medical care, less vaccination or case don't test and someone dies and is not post tested, never know. In my own view I struggle to believe figures from any country in full, many are under counted, some over counted. Does anyone believe China with 1 billion population only has 50-100 cases a day? Cambodia 3 a day like yesterday. Unless there was a defined criteria worldwide and all countries followed it to the letter I think it will be difficult to do direct comparison.

The Covid infection in the Israeli man who flouted hotel quarantine in Bangkok and traveled to Pattaya and Samui is now confirmed as having been caused by the Omicron coronavirus variant. The man is reportedly harboring only a low concentration of the virus.

Low concentration, what in God's name does that actually mean? Still contagious right? Asymptomatic?  How many days since he tested positive? A question is how long has an omicron infection been lasting.

A three-dose course of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine is effective against Omicron, the company said, citing data from an Oxford University study. Its findings match those from rivals Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, which say a third shot of their vaccines works against Omicron.

Still well below the 70% vaccination rate they wanted before they said they would open up the country, but then that goal post changed and moved and then they are still truly shy of the 100 million vaccinations if you remove the booster shots.  Boy how they love to move goal posts and add other statistics in so people believe what they say has come to fruition.
