What special day is it today?

Featured Replies

Was in Big C at 3pm when they started to play a certain 'nationalistic' song which I don't know the name of. Some people stopped and stood to attention but it went on and on and on repeating, so these standers looking disgusted at the rest of us walking about eventually had to give up and carry on. Left 30 mins later they were still playing it, could not wait to get out, god bless Boots earplugs. Must have been plying it for a reason but nobody seemed to know.

At least you are respectful and knowledgeable about your host country. I'm afraid to say but some people  are both ignorant and arrogant.

Knowledgeable.........he asked what day it was. And respectful...................could not wait to get out.

My local temple was playing non-religous music from 7am. When I asked the Mrs what it was, she had no idea. It went on for most of the day. I simply turned my music up a bit (lot!).

only song that cause Thais to immobilize in their track is the national anthem and royal anthem,

national anthem is only played at 8am and 6pm and never in malls,

Royal anthem is played on the arrival and departure of royals on formal occasion, unless somebody is cutting ribbons to open a shop in big c, which you'd be told by police to stop where you are, maybe there's a mix up in the playlist?

Er.....what time of year is it?  It is New Year isn't it so that could be a clue.  And I think you are over egging the story.

It's almost certainly a very famous New Year song written by the old King.  It is usually on loop most places this time of year along with other traditional new year songs.

I am sure you did not ask any Thai because you said "no one seemed to know" and any Thai could have told you what it was or what the songs were about.    Or perhaps you just made that bit up and you didn't actually ask anyone.

Same as at Loy Krathong you will hear traditional Loy Krathong songs.  At New Year you hear traditional New Year songs.

Maybe it was the Peoples Republic of China's national anthem?  ????

Thailand are currently beating Indonesia in the Suzuki Cup Final.

Not football fans here obviously.

EDIT: Oh, two day old topic. Ugghh.

If it was the New Year song composed by King Rama IX it must have been this one:

http://kanchanapisek.or.th/royal-music/pornpeemai.html

@clivebaxter Listen to it. Does it ring a bell?

http://kanchanapisek.or.th/music/mp3/PornPeeMai.mp3

(A better transcription of the title พรปีใหม่ would be Pon Pi Mai)

I wonder if the OP actually, really wants to know or is the inquiry a not so veiled  attempt to show contempt for what he witnessed. An attempt  to gain knowledge  is rarely couched in belligerent terms
