Taipei, Jan. 11 (CNA) Thailand has become the fifth country in the world to recognize the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Taiwan-based Medigen Vaccine Biologics, according to a list released by Thailand's government on Monday.

The Medigen vaccine was added to a list of eight previously recognized vaccines that will enable travelers to visit Thailand under its new tourism sandbox plan, according to the Thailand foreign ministry's Department of Consular Affairs.

The previously accepted COVID-19 vaccine brands were Sinovac, AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, Sinopharm, Johnson & Johnson, Sputnik V, and Covaxin (a vaccine developed in India).

ok...but isn't Thailand the sixth country as I hope that the Taiwan homegrown Medigen has been recognised by its country of birth.

Surprise to see the Kiwis on the list though, when considering the rest (New Zealand, Palau, Indonesia, and Belize.)

It would be interesting to know if the WHO has approved this vaccine.

I don’t think so, a quick Google found me an article in the NY Post from 30/12 stating it is not WHO approved.

Also the following interesting quote from NY Post :

Skepticism of the vaccine’s effectiveness resulted in low demand in Taiwan. About 80 percent of island residents are now vaccinated, with most receiving US-approved Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or the WHO-approved AstraZeneca vaccine.” :whistling:

I wonder when Thailands many virologist experts will come up with something?

There were issues with its Phase III trail methodology (results from Phase I and II were good).

WHO has now included it in its "Solidarity Trial Vaccines", a Phase III trial of promising vaccines. That is AFAIK still ongoing and a WHO decision on approval won't be forthcoming until results are in.
