NATO Unity Faltering as Calls Grow for a No-Fly Zone Over Ukraine

Agreement among NATO allies appears to be faltering as more nations call for a no-fly zone over Ukraine.

NATO's secretary-general said Wednesday the alliance's members were united in the decision not to deploy forces on the ground or in the airspace of Ukraine as Russia's invasion of the eastern European nation intensifies.

...

But on Thursday, the Associated Press reported that Lithuania's parliament unanimously approved a resolution calling for a no-fly zone over Ukraine—joining other NATO members Estonia and Slovenia in the appeal.

Fortunately, no one is listening to them.

I think that might eventuate if the war continues. Poland has already mooted sending troops into Ukraine on a peacekeeping mission and Biden is headed to Poland this week.

The enemy continues "mobilization" in temporarily occupied territories. In particular, the next wave takes place in the territory of the Donetsk region. In order to increase the number of potential "principles", the occupiers increase the age rate of "military personnel" - from 55 to 65 years old.

The Russian military says it will continue using its state-of-the-art hypersonic missile to hit particularly important targets in Ukraine.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said Monday that the Kinzhal hypersonic missile “has proven its efficiency in destroying heavily fortified special facilities.”

Kinzhal was used for these strikes due to its high kinetic energy and its ability to penetrate defenses.

Look who's calling for a more forceful western response to Russia's war crimes in Ukraine -- Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovenia, etc.

They're all in the neighborhood and all NATO members. They know who and what Putin is...  And they know they could be next on Russia's list somewhere down the line.

The clear and attrocious targeting of innocent, non-combatant Ukrainian civilians and civilian targets by the Russian military -- no accidents or targeting errors -- becomes increasingly untenable to common sense people in the West.

Russia Threatens Poland in Lengthy Letter Days Before Joe Biden's Visit

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian security council, on Monday threatened Poland in a lengthy letter, just days before U.S. President Joe Biden is due to visit the country.

...

Medvedev was referring to a decision made by Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki last week to minimize dependence on Russia and sever economic ties with Moscow in response to the Ukraine invasion that began on February 24.

"We will deal with the de-Russification of the Polish and European economy," Morawiecki told a news conference on March 18. "We call for the suspension of activities on the Russian market."

I didn't see any explicit or even implicit military threat from medvedev. But I guess given how poorly the Russian armed forces have performed, it wouldn't pack much of a punch anyway.

Classic doom headline.

The reported events are not an example of NATO unity faltering, support for Ukraine amongst NATO members remain unanimous, Lithuania would like to do more.

Not sure how it is possible to arrange a public vote right now, and also a secure one. The compromises will be about Nato, demilitarisation and the easter provinses securing a land corridor for the russians to Crimea.

I do not know Inews, but found simular article in Telegraph behind wall, and a valid Norwegian news source.

The takeaway from this is that there won't be any compromises. If the EU determine that genocide is occurring this week it's possible that NATO will act to insert a peacekeeping force, in my opinion.

Hopefully the Russians Remove Putin themselves, and no need to involve any other country or Nato!

But I feel it might be necessery to intervene at some point, but we are not there yet. It takes time to form an solid backing from every country, but as you say, genocide, use of gas could be the triggers. Genocides normally  takes time to official reckonize unfortunately.

Secretive American Stocks Of Soviet Air Defense Systems Are Headed To Ukraine:

The U.S. government is sending Soviet-era air defense systems in its possession to Ukraine, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. These systems will reportedly come from stocks of foreign materiel that elements of the U.S. military and Intelligence Community have obtained in various ways over the years for intelligence analysis and training purposes

Meanwhile, the West is still buying huge amounts of gas and oil from Russia. Until this is stopped - Russia will not collapse economically and there will not be any serious threat to Putin’s regime from within. Macdonalds and Facebook’s withdrawal from Russia will not do the job. There is a lot of hype about recent sanctions but the most important ways of isolating Russia’s economy are still not utilized.

I agree, and said earlier to the sanctions they can do, is a joke in the beginning of this war.

But if many of those who is harmed personally, is powerful enough to remove Putin, then they succeed, but if not, these sanctions is only harming the average Ivan.

It’s not simply McDonalds and Facebook.

Russia has been denied access to international banking, money transfers/transactions, had been blocked by the two largest internet providers, has had offshore assets seized and is no longer able to access technology supplies.

The ‘special economic operation’ is damaging the already weak Russian economy.

Sorry, you're misreading the meaning of the news report headline above... (which the news source wrote, not me).

It doesn't mean NATO's resolve against Russia is faltering.

It does mean, the prior collective NATO position AGAINST direct involvement is "faltering," with the several named NATO countries in the report now urging stronger, direct NATO action against Russia such as a no-fly zone.

The NATO non-involvement stance is faltering (with some member countries now beginning to dissent)... which is correct... and not necessarily a bad thing.

It is no surprise Lithuania and Estonia are supporting a no-fly zone. They are probably next if Russia beats Ukraine.

It's the countries nearby to Russia, not surprisingly, that are advocating stronger NATO action for the very reason you mention.

It's the far away countries like the U.S. that thus far have been opposing it, understandably, out of fear direct NATO involvement could lead to some version of WWIII and nukes being deployed.

Hopefully, there's some way the west can DO MORE in a meaningful way that isn't likely to trigger the various nightmare scenarios.
