Popular Post webfact
The impact on Thailand’s economy from the Russia-Ukraine conflict will depend on how long the hostilities go on and whether they will escalate, economic observers have noted. In response to Russian troops invading Ukraine last week, the United States and its allies have imposed sanctions on Russia and Russian leaders, with threats of more stringent actions. The sanctions imposed by the US, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Japan, and Australia include freezing the assets of Russian banks, the personal assets of President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle, an export ban on materials Russia uses for oil refineries, halting the export of goods such as semiconductors, cutting high-tech imports to stop it developing its military capabilities and stopping major Russian companies and the state from raising funds or borrowing money. The US has also imposed a travel ban on Putin and his Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Thailand’s Foreign Ministry on February 25 announced a plan to evacuate 236 Thais living in Ukraine. Popular Post daveAustin
Everyone will lose—high oil price etc—and esp those with bilateral links with Russia I guess. But it’s in Thailand’s hands. As suggested, they could sweep up billions if they stop being silly and grow up on entry requirements. 14

Popular Post Tropposurfer
May be an opportunity to rethink and rework some of the less than stellar attitudes and actions around Iran and go to them for more oil and gas. They have the worlds second largest reserves of natural gas. Lord knows there needs to be some new thinking around the relationships of the west to Iran. This might be a way to begin a return to a stable middle east, and de-radicalise Iran to some degree by cooperation rather than feeding the narrative of 'an evil axis' as Bush coined. This way the screws can really be tightened (he is still drawing in huge sums of money for gas and oil because not all the flow of SWIFT and gratuities for the two are stopped by the sanctions imposed to date and proposed ones) on Putins megalomaniacal ideas of reinventing a neo-Czarist Empire, and hasten his demise and allow the Russian people (who want, this from what my Rusky friends tell me) to return to some hope (its dwindling rapidly) of being a vibrant part of the global community. 5

I went and checked the charts and the rouble has weakened massively (halved in value) since 2014 already against $/Euro/RMB. Perhaps part of Putin's motivation, the good old fashioned patriotic war to mask internal economic failure trick. Of course, that poor economic outlook hasn't even slightly impaired the ability of the Russian kleptocracy to enrich themselves, with over 100 Russian billionaires now on the sanctions watchlist. The West has been party to this, often welcoming these people with open arms. (Yes, I am looking at you Roman Abramovich). It seems the turning a blind-eye on such things in now over but I am sure these people will find other welcoming, if less glamourous, nations that will be happy to accommodate their ill-gotten gains. China must be rubbing their hands with glee at this whole situation. Such a shame that 30+ years after the collapse of the Wall and the fresh hope that Russia would re-integrate and become a valuable and powerful European partner, that here we are in 2022.... If it wasn't for their O&G exports, which are now surely under threat in the short/medium term, not sure what else they have to rely on as economic engines, particularly if operating under pariah nation status. Dark days ahead for the average working Russian. 8
