Rally highlights lack of fair treatment and decent wages for workers in one of the world's most unequal societies

Hundreds of young Thais have protested for workers’ rights in central Bangkok, saying the Southeast Asian nation’s exploitative capitalist system is preventing low-income earners from progressing in society.

 

The activists gathered outside a cultural center in the heart of the city on Feb. 27 during an hours-long, street fair-style event that featured street art, speakers and educational booths as groups of police officers kept watch from the perimeters.

 

In emotional speeches, activists decried the hierarchical economic system in Thailand, one of the world’s most unequal nations, and called for increased rights for members of the working class.

 

“In Thailand, if you are a working man or woman, your chances of moving up the social ladder are very limited because often you can never make enough money as an employee,” Sudarat Thongdee, a woman who was handing out leaflets, told a UCA News reporter.

Well , if you are skilled enough , Technology, finance , industry expert , then you can do great. But if your job is to just pick up papers from one table, stamp them and move them over to another , then I guess you get paid to your worth.

Yes, they should pay everyone a living wage .

Make it worthwhile for Thais to make a living doing typically working class jobs , like construction work .

  Government schemes to teach them trade skills and give them some incentive to work and also improve the shoddy construction methods

With an almost inexhaustible supply of cheap labour brought in/smuggled in, Thais will never be offered a decent wage.........the likes of CP will see to that.

Open the country up before it's too late. Obviously the lack of tourism is going to be a big factor here as the money spent in the tourist areas feeds out to the rest of the country. You can't allow a country to grow to a certain population size and then remove a fifth of its income without drastic consequences.

 

Stop dilly dallying, let the foreign booze bags and whore mongers back in, and watch these problems go away. 

 

I realise the higher ups don't like the reputation Thailand has, but without providing a new revenue stream they can either let the tourists back in or watch their people starve.

I often walk the RR track from where it comes across Sukhumvit near soi 1, on out to the Saen Saep canal. I would never use the word slum as in the OP; prefer shantytown. Even the dogs are used to me now! People don't seem to be suffering, and they are a big step above the homeless one sees around soi 3. The whole thing is a comment on LOS, visual worth a 1000 words. I recommend the walk if you don't already have your own version.

Many a huge company started in a bedroom, kitchen or garage and reached top level in relative short time; if you are innovative you got a chance to make it in a lot of countries, including Thailand.

It is not just those at the bottom of the ladder that suffer. My niece got a salaried job 2 months ago, but still exploited. Works 6 days a week, starting at 8 a.m., meant to finish a 5 p.m., but actually made to work for up to another 2 hours (unpaid of course). No sick pay when forced to isolate when a co-worker got Covid, and docked 2,000 baht a month for some <deleted> reason. 

She quit on Monday.

Education is free in some countries ,  yet they invariably end up with a sizable loan if they have not parents that can support them through there education period .

Well then, why don't the parents push their kids to study harder and learn better rather than be satisfied with a no-fail policy. They recognize that knowledge and education are the first step in the right direction yet they fail to put in any effort.????

The key to education is parental pressure....100%.......no one recognises this more so than the Chinese.

 

Too many parents don't care, don't understand or simply abdicate responsibility for their own children's education to the state.

Because quality education is not cheap...and since Parents are not educated, they dont see hope in better education. Make it free with laser focus on science, technology and language.
