Three dead in north Thailand after crane with basket causes wall collapse

Mueang Jee police in Lamphun in northern Thailand were called after a wall collapsed at the Sahaphat industrial estate.

 

A crane with basket involved in putting on a roof at a new factory in the estate hit scaffolding causing it to collapse and collide with the wall that toppled over killing three workers.

 

Rescue workers at the scene found a 5m x 5m section of wall had collapsed.

The victims were named as Patiphon, 20, Chitnupong, 46.

 

Suriya, 37, had initially survived being hit by the breeze blocks but died later in hospital. 

 

Police said that the basket hit scaffolding that then collided with the wall. 

 

Investigations continue, reported Daily News.

And very little to zero inspection and monitoring by local authorities. 

 

I wonder if there was even a qualified engineer on site?

I wonder if the guy who died in the hospital is reported/included to OSHA in their site accident report?

 

Treating it like a road fatality would help keep numbers down

That must have been one extraordinarily heavy baby the crane was delivering.

Looking at the photo on the right side where the scaffolding is there is a wall behind it that appears to be leaning over too.

A swift breath test of the crane operator should provide the probable cause.

Most manual labourers start the day with a shot or 2 of Lao Khao in my experience, followed by more of the same at lunchtime.

Bit of a myth 'jerry built' our house in England was jerry built by German prisoners of war, where i believe that expression came from as a derogatory term. That house is still standing with perfect brick work and original roof, no cracks or lose tiles. Unlike my Thai built house with leaky roof, not enough screws in gypsum board making it sag. just saying.

 Crane operator/rigger at fault IMO, crane operators only need a licence if off shore or working for big oil companies to the best of my knowledge, one also has to be fairly good at maths, that goes for riggers too. Mia Pen ria TIT

Its the old domino effect to blame again. Nothing to do with a bad crane driver, unsafe scaffolding and poorly constructed walls.

Also look at the distance between the posts in the wall and the height of the first cross beam support in the wall.  These supports appear quite far apart.

 

Take a look at the vertical posts in the wall.  They appear to be made from stacked blocks rather than the normal steel reinforced poured concrete.
