My passport is due to expire in October and my visa end of March.

Now I was told that they will only give me a visa until October - not for a full year like normal if I renew with a passport that is about to expire later this year.

I have previously transferred a visa from one passport to another - why would this now suddenly be a problem?

Very confused here.

They can only give extension  up till date your pp expires.

The problem is that you haven't obtained new pp.

You are not thinking clearly here...How can they give you an extension valid for a year, when your passport is only valid until October.

If you have time to get a new passport this month, then use that to renew and get a full year, otherwise obtain a new passport before October and use it then to renew for one year. This is not rocket science.

(To answer your other query.. yes an extension can always be transferred to a new passport, but only up to the length of the extension, which in your scenario would only be thru October).
