IMHO, Bamrungrad is worse than my local govt hospital.

My daughter was born in Bamrungrad when it first opened and we had a bad experience; it was run like a business, not a hospital. We were initially told 29k for the birth and ended up paying 80k+. The typical BS like she needs a Caesarian as the doctor doesn't like to give up his tee time. 300 baht every time she needed a breast pump. There's nothing wrong with her but better to go into ICU to be safe. And to top it some high-so <deleted> called me 'farang kee nok' in the toilets

The next birth was 10 times better in Khon Kaen and cost nothing, fun in a ward with 12 beds, somtam and sticky rice abound.

A neighbor had a major surgery at Queen Sirikit, generally accepted as the best government hospital in the area. For follow up appointments with the Dr they pack a lunch and leave the house at 6am to stand in queue. They're typically home late afternoon after they finally get their 15 minute consult. 

 

I've heard similar stories about waiting times from others, one of whom sat in queue for 6 hours just to get discharge papers. 

 

My guess is that that would keep these hospitals off of the "World's Best" lists, in spite of them offering a good value for the uninsured.

Many patients can move up the queue, by knowing some doctor or cleaner at the hospital.

The thing that many can do is find out the specialist and pay a visit to their clinic beforehand.

As a foreigner, do you think it is right to make use of goverment hospitals and then be prioritized in front of the locals? Just asking for a friend.

I'm not a foreigner. 

 

This happens in my home country, Scotland - my mother is getting a knee replacement operation at the local govt. hospital.  The doc said the operation could take a couple of years but she just got an appointment as the doctor was a medical student when my mother worked at the university.

Often govt hospitals are better, unless you have to wait 6 hours.

Me too. I can get treatment almost immediately here instead of waiting years in the UK NHS.

I can tend to agree with you, since many Dr work both places, and also have their smaller clinics, but after all as I said before, it is an personal experience and feeling, since if you are not an medical educated person on exactly what you are treated for, how could really know the difference?

 

Most of the time, private hospitals is more updated on critical equipment. 

 

My experience in Thailand is 4 different Bangkok Hospitals where I found Phuket and Bangkok the best, Pattaya ok - and Hua Hin terrible! Hua Hin government hospital maybe better than or on par with Hua Hin Bangkok Hospital, but again, my feeling on being treated good and how safe I feel.

 

IT all comes down to communication, and Bangkok Hospital in Bangkok I had Dr's who had good language, had time to explain and also ask the right questions, who also gave their experience telling me what to eat and what to avoid to not use medication, and  instead lecture me how to treat myself and changing my diet. 

 

Next time I came back, my blood was on normal levels again .

My father had his hip replaced almost instantly. If you are willing to pay for it yourself, like Thailand,  any system can be made "immediate".

So obvious priveliged and also biased? I know Army hospitals are prioritized compare to what Normal citizens have to use. 
 

What I have seen of Government hospitals in Krabi, Phetchabun, and Chaiyaphum, is far far away from any private hospital I have been to. Have to Admit my experience with Krabi hospital is way back in time thow, but only if dead, I would let anyone take me there. 
 

Hua Hin Hospital diagnosed my friend wrong, which led to complications that could had been avoided, and not discovered before he went to Bumrungrand hospital in Hua Hin.

You are so far from reality of what kind of hospitals ordinary Thais have access to. You need an reality check, and seems to live in a unrealistic booble!

Hahaha.......rushed to hospital awhile ago out in the sticks.

 

Told the doctor I had insurance....the doctor turned to the nurse and told her to put me in the "VIP room".........

 

A room with a bed, blood all down the walls (to be fair, probably from squashed mosquitos)......it was en suite in that it had a squat toilet and handbasin. The handbasin was hanging off the wall with so many ants crawling all over it you could hardly see any porcelain.......how we larfed.

It is fair enough that some government hospitals is up to date, especially army connected hospitals, but normal Thais are not transfered there from their local hospitals unless they have some priority (Government employed or other Vip). To be transfered from a village hospital to a  provincial government hospital, means you are dying, and most likely to late.

 

My experience is similar to yours.

Just be fair.......(which I hate to do)........the hospital in question has been rebuilt since or certainly extended.

 

Still looks a bit rough and ready around the edges, but I imagine it must have improved somewhat inside.

 

You know it's Thai............ the outside is painted in three different shades of vivid lilac.

I visited my friend in The PIH in Pattaya.....  what a view over the sea. (Some years ago, maybe the Amari or Holiday Inn have ruined it now). If he had a balcony I would have moved in!

I know very well what ordinary Thais have access to, btw I am Thai. 

I said that govt. hospitals have better equipment than private hospitals but you refuse to accept this, as you've been to some govt. hospital in the middle of nowhere that were not so good. I can only imagine why you went to some 'baan nawk' institution, being a foreigner here.

Even in the provinces(you never did explain what you meant by districts), most of the best doctors work in both govt. and private hospitals.

I learnt the hard way. if you need to see a doctor research the hospital websites and read the bios of the doctors, i would only go to one that has spent time in the west. do not just take the hospitals recommendation.
