Thai Rath reporters went to the Pho Thong area of Selaphum in Roi-Et in Thailand's NE region where they met an 18 year old who wants to be going places.

But poverty is presenting awkward hurdles.

Nanthiwa Saenghuachang - also known as Cat - has already won a place at Mahasarakham University to be part of the humanities faculty in the study of Thai language.

Contact has already been made by the aspiring young lady who just finished M6 at Pho Thong Withayakan school with a grade average of 3.43.

Her mum has taken out a loan to pay the first term fees of 12,000 but now the family needs to pay off that loan.

So they are collecting cardboard, plastic bottle and other trash for its recycle value.

Anything to make ends meet for this very poor family who also have three younger brothers under the one roof.

Thai Rath gave the following bank account number in the name Nanthiwa Saenghuachang for possible donations: 439-0-62618-3 (Krung Thai bank).

Sad in so many respects that a young person and her family have to struggle so much for this girl to gain a decent education........However, I am puzzled as to how this has been picked up as news item? Even sending out a photographer?

Studying Thai language? Is that the equivalent of being an English teacher?

It's the equivalent of doing an English degree in the UK. A teaching degree is different. Graduates who have an English degree can continue and take a Post Graduate course to qualify as a teacher of English they are not automatically English teachers.
