TRAT, April 1 (TNA) – A tourist was stabbed in his neck by a needlefish while swimming in the Tan Khu Bay and a local administrator warned tourists to beware of such fish.

 

Suchart Jitmanotham, president of the administrative organization of Bang Pid sub-district, received a report that a 35-year-old man identified only as Nopadol was stabbed in his neck by a needlefish while swimming in the Tan Khu Bay in Bang Pid sub-district in Laem Ngop district. He was rushed to Trat Hospital for an urgent operation.

His relative Sasiwimol said while their family was relaxing in the bay, Mr Nopadol shouted that a fish hit his neck and swam back to the beach. Then she phoned for help.

Also: In 2018, 22-year-old Thai navy cadet Kriangsak Pengpanich was killed after getting speared during a training exercise.

 

Have seen them while snorkeling but not considered them as potentially dangerous (till now)

 

 

 

 

 

Probably murky lagoon like water. That's not a fish I'm familiar with as ocean species.

 

Suggest he swim in clear waters where there are only frogfish, scorpion fish, jellyfish to worry about haha.

 

Beware of the fish lol.

One of the famous scuba divers, I forget who, used to say that he always wore a full body suit and cap because everything in the ocean scratches, bites, or stings.  I found that to be good advice.

Yeah I know, I used to watch all his shows on TV back in the UK when a youngster, his boat the Calypso, what a lovely thing that was.

Needle fish are relatively calm and very inquisitive, and range from 30 centimeters to more than a meter. They look like a bit like barracudas. Never had any problems with them. When you go snorkeling, they will follow your every move. Sometimes groups of 20 or up are circling you. Quite impressive and even a bit intimidating. They are not dangerous unless you startle them and they shoot out of the water at high speed.

AH well, we are about the same age then, also was intrigued by his films and saw them when younger.
