Thailand faces a “crucial” period for its Covid situation heading into the Songkran holidays, a senior doctor told Thai Enquirer on Monday, with the government preparing for the worst case scenario should cases rise exponentially.

Case numbers have stayed high but steady at around 20,000 cases per day over the last month caused in part by the omicron variant.

However according to Dr Prasit Watanapa, a senior doctor at Siriraj Hospital, that number could rise to 100,000 cases per day after Songkran if people do not take precautions.

Very unlikely, cases appear to have naturally peaked as they had long ago in other parts of the world.  Its just taking longer in Thailand because of extreme social distancing policies.

So you think it is fake news coming out of the UK, even the word "lockdown" has been voiced again.

Covid-19 infections in England reached their highest level in March since the pandemic began, driven by the omicron subvariant BA.2 and waning immunity among older adults, according to a new study.

Test and you shall find. I know of tens of people, moi included, who had Covid at one stage and decided to stay home and self monitor.

I just need to listen to the neighbours on my left and right. They work every day, are out and about, and, when they are at home they keep coughing (Long Covid)? - The official statistics are a joke!

Cases haven't peaked they just aren't being reported. Couple of doctor friends of the wife says that there is massive underreporting due to lack of testing.

In the USA the top doctor says that in Fall cases could climb as well. Just more good news about

the future of this COVID world we are living in. and the USA is not improving right now as well. So Thailand

do not feel alone with the continuing COVID situation.

with all these negative news lately on the consequences of Songkran, why are these clowns even entertaining the idea of allowing it at all???

seems to me they want the spikes to surge and turn around and tell the mass, " We told you so! "

Not just lack of testing. Thai's dont want the extra costs/burdens associated with a positive result and there is still a fear and stigma attached to covid infection.

Agree entirely as to the costs/burdens of a positive result although not sure the stigma is still there to the same extent as before regards a positive result. Plenty of people posting pics of their +ve atk results online which would have been unheard of last year.

So many people, including the author of this article conflate immunity and what the vaccine was ALWAYS intended.

Even Fauchi, said everyone has either had Covid or will get it now, when talking about Omnicron.

The vaccine was NEVER about 100 percent preventing people from getting a slight case of a cold like symptom or scratchy throat. It was ALWAYS stated to be about preventing serious illness and death, which it has done.

Those that still choose to be completely unvaccinated, that's another story, but the rest of the world can not continue to be held hostage forever regarding this. Covid is endemic, those who still want to talk about Covid as if there are no vaccines, no other methods of treatments that have been created since this came out, I really feel sorry for. Endemic means Covid is ALWAYS going to be with us, just like the Flu is now.

Every variant is weaker and weaker, and that is how the progression of these things always go. It's time to rip the bandage off the wound, to see there's nothing there.

I've got friends in Thailand, UK, Australia who have had covid recently. None have gone anywhere near a doctor. let alone a hospital. All have tested themselves, then isolated for roughly a week, after which time they tested neg and had fully recovered. Most reported having mild cold/flu-like symptoms on day 1 & day 2, then felt "fine" for the remainder of the time until they tested neg. My Thai friends who have had covid mostly had 2 jabs of sino, some also had a Pf booster. My Aussie & UK friends were all triple vaxed with various combinations of AZ, Pf, Mod. However, one UK friend who is a staunch anti-vaxer and covid denier, in his 70s and unvaxed, said it was like a bad flu. He had a rough time for a couple of weeks but is now "fine".

Correct. Country people in Thailand can not afford to be staying home.

A great deal of the population live in the country.

They have had the hell scared out of them if they reported positive. Now they just move on.

Yes, the number of reported cases have been falling with several suggested reasons.

The ONS( Real-time Assessment of Community Transmission (REACT) study.) figures tell a completely different story.  This is a random sampling study carried out regularly and I think the latest one showed something like 1 in 12 people infected in March, an all time high.

At the end of the day the more important factor is the hospitalisations which have risen significantly from  Christmas to around 20K/day, there is some optimism that could now have peaked.

Highly irresponsible to refer to covid as a slight case of cold.

The common cold and flu have been around for decades, it is far too early in the covid life cycle to be making rash decisions.

Up to 60% of patients with SARS-CoV-2 experience a loss of smell and taste (it should be noted that the perception of taste is markedly affected with the loss of smell). Many have assumed this symptom is because of nasal congestion or damage to the nerve receptors in the nose. However, data from a recent study published in the journal Nature support a more chilling prospect—that this symptom is caused by spread of the infection to the brain’s olfactory cortex, and from there the virus can spread to other structures causing memory and cognitive impairment.

https://www.infectioncontroltoday.com/view/covid-19-brain-changes-new-evidence-details-long-term-effects-infection

Catching Covid is associated with a fivefold increase in the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and a 33-fold increase in risk of a potentially fatal blood clot on the lung in the 30 days after becoming infected, data suggests.

The findings, published in the British Medical Journal on Thursday, could help explain a doubling in the incidence of, and deaths from, blood clots in England since the start of the pandemic compared with the same periods in 2018 and 2019.

no change, as it's always been... those most adversely effected by covid have been the elderly and those with underlying health conditions. the average age, in the uk, of covid fatalities in over 80 years.

what has always been the issue is healthcare resources taken up treating covid patients, most countries now have this sorted. it's a fair guess that part of thailand's reluctance to open up is due to concerns that their health care system could not cope.

you are one of the people who conflate the entire covid experience to what it is today.

Certainly before vaccines, and before Omicron, is very very different that it is at this period of time. "and is what I said originally"

I would say it is you who are very irresponsible wanting the world to live in hiding the next 1000 years.

Most of that gibberish is for those who are not vaccinated.

please go to some remote island where nobody else is, and you can quarantine there until you feel safe, if ever.

No need to test. Look at India. And US CDC recognized India's numbers and put it in low risk level 1 country for Covid compared to Western Europe which are recognized for high risk level 4 country. People lacking smartness and living as refugee in a foreign land on "wife visa" whose voices  are never heard outside this forum can rant as much as they want but nobody really cares. Follow India's path Thailand will soon be put in Level 1 low risk country and more Americans will flock to Thailand as "wife visa" refugees.
