Popular Post LaosLover
Due to crazy a rental market, plus pension, this will indeed be my budget when I move to Bangkok this fall. This is just to live on for 31 days, stuff like visa's, medical insurance, vacations, education and extraneous purchases will come out of a separate pot. It's for 2 people (I am bringing my wife along, like a ham sandwich to a picnic). Youtube shows up likely living in the Ari district for about 50K a month in rent. We like to eat at a 4* restaurant about twice a week. We'll get personal trainers and Thai language tutors. She likes to drink a decent bottle of Pinot Grigio a couple of times a week. I have no vices, but will prob get a med marijuana script. So it seems like not much change left at the end of the month, even with 4,000 baht a day walking around money. Question: how easy (and how much) is it to hook up with a regular Uber driver we can sort of have on semi-call when we need him? 1 4

Popular Post PJ71
It will be very tight on 170K a month, i'd suggest to increase to 200-250K if you can. 3 1
LaosLover
Wha? Where am I? Is this a thread about Burmese women? I donn' unnnerstannn'. Or do I? Not unnnerstann'ing is my self presentation to the world. I hope it's passing for piercing wit. My attitude is that I am grateful for falling into dumb-posterior luck with a hot housing property and ready to live some version of the high life to whatever level I can. And looking for a little advice, or at least humous you-know-what-taking. Not the usual bitterness of jaded skinflints. Would def like to hear about the incremental diffs between 170, 200, and 250. Popular Post it is what it is
everyone has different expectations, but if you think you can have even a half decent life on 170k/month, forget it. 4
Popular Post HauptmannUK
I assume this is a troll post. ฿170k a month (around 4k GBP) is hardly a 'high life' budget, especially in central Bangkok - which wouldn't be a great place to spend retirement. My wife (Thai) and I have a potential budget of around £6k/month (฿240k) BUT we never spend anything like that. My wife owns a couple of properties (no rent to pay), we can both speak Thai and we exercise in the gym and by walking and swimming. Used to own a Camry but too big for just two people so just bought a new smaller car. Bolt app. if I don't want to drive. We struggle to spend ฿80k a month. Rest normally goes into bank/trackers - my kids will get it eventually. To answer your question, Uber is very 2020, Bolt is the thing now. Not sure why you would want to keep a driver on a retainer. They will likely be eating or sleeping when you want them. Just use Bolt app. Edited June 11, 2022 by HauptmannUK
OneMoreFarang
Let's say it like this: It should be enough. But it's not that it's impossible to spend all that money and it's certainly not impossible to make (huge) mistakes and/or get into trouble. If you plan to come to Thailand for a long time then I suggest you should get a professional personal assistant or something like that. Professional! Not just anybody. Such a person could help you to find all those other people. And they could do it in a way that you get quality (teacher, driver, etc.) for a reasonable amount of money. Otherwise you will likely pay too much for substandard service. Thailand is a wonderful country to live in. And lots of people give you lots of options to spend more than you ever dreamed about. Enjoy! And be careful.
Chris.B
Me and my missus manage to get by on 250,000 baht a month excluding stuff like visa's, medical insurance, vacations, education and extraneous purchases which comes out of a separate pot. I wouldn't like to try it on anything less. ???? 1

Popular Post LaosLover
You can't spend 80K a month, but 170K aint nothing? Driver-wise, I'm looking to find an English-speaking driver who I'd use a lot on a regular basis and would pay said driver a premium for that. I don't expect him to be on call, 24 hours a day or wear a uniform, or open the car door for me. Do people come to arrangements like this and if so, how? We just left Mexico where we spent about $2,500 a month for the life I just described. Obv, on $5K a month, I could live in most places in the world pretty well. Thailand is my passion. Google searches only take me to 100K a month, where I am assured of 1%er lifestyle bliss. Looking for idea's instead of dour cheapskate naysayers offering zero anything. The English/Aussie class hangups are strong here. But.....but... is this about Mexico or Thailand? I don' unnnerstannn. -Just to save someone here a post. 1

Popular Post Jerno
You obviously have more money than 98% of those on this Forum, so hire someone to figure out your personal finances, as you obviously are inept to do do. Seemingly lame to ask for such advice on the Forum. Sheesh! Some people. 3 2
LaosLover
If I have more money than 98% of the people here, then how am I financially inept and what does that make them? Sheesh, indeed. I got no diss for someone on 30K in Issan; they're like gods to me and I have learned a lot from reading their stories. The idea of a farang assistant/concierge is new to me. And seems fraught with potential for fraud. I'm guessing you will be long on sullen resentment and short on actual advice.
buick
i don't think you'll have a problem finding a decent, somewhat regular driver. once you are settled in your place, try using grab, bolt, and regular taxis. after a month or so, you'll probably come across someone who seems like a worthwhile person to use regularly. these drivers will typically be happy to give you their phone number and confirm rides a day in advance or maybe a couple hours in advance. i had a guy i used for awhile, he was part of a taxi rank that was parked in front of a major hotel nearby. very few have great english but it isn't too hard to come across a person who can communicate with a non thai speaker.
LaosLover
I've had the experience of getting a good driver in Bangkok and getting his phone number and tipping him up so he responds. One time, he took me out to an amulet market out in the burbs. We took a holy man out to Burger King. In Mexico, you have to be careful that your new best friend driver doesn't become your burglar up the road. Which is my second question: how do you vet people? How do you hide your wealth? How much notice does a 170K person draw from the locals? Should I downgrade to a 30K apartment to avoid problems?
The Hammer2021
Very easy to have a regular driver or two. I have one in every major city I know and trust. Bolt is the best taxi service here not Uber. That being said I have the sneaking suspicion you are going to be very unhappy here.

And when you are not using the car, you can tell the driver to use it as uber/bolt car to earn some extra money for him.
