Thai Electricity Authority places artificial reefs made from old electric insulators around Koh Larn

Koh Larn, Pattaya — The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), the city of Pattaya, and the Department of Marine Coastal Resources have placed 300 sets of artificial reefs around Koh Larn.

 

This activity was recently convened for the 9th time yesterday, June 14th on Koh Larn, Pattaya, Chonburi.

Kiattisak Sriwongchai, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Pattaya City, who presided over the opening ceremony, stated that the success of yesterday’s activity was the result of collaboration between the private and public sectors.

Perhaps someone could advise me on here but what material are these old electrical insulators made of and could they degrade in salt water eventually ?

The insulators themselves are ceramic and pretty well indestructable.

 

Now if they are still on the steel frames as in the photos the steel, even galvanised, will degrade pretty rapidly, but it's really no worse than sinking an old aircraft carrier which seems a popular pastime.

hmmm ... assembling & dumping your trash in the sea, and calling it an 'artificial reef'

 

Mixed thoughts on that, although in 10 years I may be very nice down there.

Got it, now I know why there are so many artificial plastic reefs in klongs !

Used to be pot...... I expect there is metal in them too,  that will certainly corrode in sea water.

It would not be smart to put metal, a conductor, in an insulator.

They've been snipping miles of cable on Kao Noi & piling it in heaps ready to make new reefs in Pattaya bay.

Great Idea!!! — Fish and other assorted marine life will love all this!!! 

But why stop there? There are car batteries - car tires - fridges & etc

..... and as a Bonus we get rid of 300 sets of pesky Electric Insulators????

Thailand - The Hub of Artificial Reef? We could even import .. .. ..
