Thai govt lottery, anyone know how it works?

I kinda know how it works, you get I think three numbers and you can win a smaller prize...all numbers you get the jackpot etc and have a whole bunch of new friends.

What I don't understand is a Thai persons thinking when they buy tickets....and not judging here, I just don't understand it.

My understanding is tickets should be sold at 80 baht but generally the smaller sellers sell them for 100 baht. Hence the govt has gone online selling direct which I assume will put a lot of poor buggers out of work. Sort of mixed feelings there....Like they annoy the cr@p out if me in restaurants etc when they wont go away, even when I refuse in Thai. But on the other hand it is some income for I guess unskilled people who may otherwise not be able to make a living unless it was hard labor on a farm. What I don't understand is people paying more for say a set (all the same numbers) of 5 or 10. For eg one ticket normally 100 baht....set of 5 800 baht.

Now I know how superstitious Thais are and I am guessing people buy in sets when their is a particular set or sequence of numbers they want...had a dream, new car number plate, someone's birthday etc. Is that the only reason?

My farang thinking would be if I wanted to buy some lottery tickets...say 5....I would rather get them mixed, so I have a better chance of winning the main prize. Rather then bet the farm on one number. Anyone have any insights how it all works? What sort of combinations can you win? First three numbers? First two numbers? Last three numbers..

And if anyone has any insight what about the village / black lottery? How does this work? been here 8 years and never got my head around any of it

And by the way, these people selling govt lottery tickets for 100 baht...does anyone know how much the agents pay for them?

Watch channel 32 on lottery day and you can see it all Live,

Then you might "get your head around it"

Simply there are:

prize 1 for all 6

Then a new set for  each prize 2, 3 4 .

Then 2 sets of 3 numbers for the 1st 3 numbers of your ticket, then 2 more sets of 3 for the last 3 numbers.

Finally the last 2 numbers of the six.

There have been many winners who boight 6 sets etc and then win 6 x ie 36 milion.

Easier to buy online now and pay the correct value 80bt.

Hope that helps.

Think of it as the odds like horse racing at the bookmakers back home, some 2,3 digit numbers that's sought after this cycle will get the price that reflect their odds,

on underground lottery, some thai bookies wouldn't even take certain 'hot' numbers for certain months, their odd calculation is all based in superstition of course, but there's volume to back it up, underground bookies will see the volume of bets coming in and increase the price or remove it from sale all together if they think too many is betting on them, how the punters got their number is hardly any of their concern, but even then when certain shaman or monks has been giving out good numbers for a particular long streak, they might get a hit put on them for costing the bookies too much

They actually draw several winning lottery numbers.  Take a look here for an example:

Thai Lottery Result Today 16-06-2022 Live Draw Thailand Lottery (thailotterydraw.com)

That's probably the most self explanatory web page results I have seen yet. Yes it does indeed look like they draw many numbers and shows all the combinations you can win. There are some pretty good apps now though probably not in English were it instantly tells you if you won something. Good double check.

maybe a stupid question but can a foreigner win the lottery? I guess one of the good things about buying online is it confirms you are the owner of the ticket, if they keep records that is. Knowing Thailand may not be the case.

Yes.

But not only do you have the overcharging for tickets to start but also you have to pay 2-3% of the winnings to people locally to cash in the winning tickets unless you want to go to the main lottery office in Bangkok.  I believe Om Sin, Goverment Savings Bank, will cash tickets for you if you have an account with them.  I don't know if they have a small charge for it or not.

I guess if you won the big prize it would warrant a trip to Bangkok. 3% of say second prize of 200,000 only 6000. May still be worth a trip to Bkk, or at least pay for the flights if you wanted to go there anyway. Otherwise no biggy. I don't suppose if you buy tickets online you get winnings automatically deposited in your account or something as logical as that?

The Thai lottery system is typical of the way things are done in Thailand i.e. over complicated and too many steps .    The prizes are low when considering the price of the ticket . Are all the sales paid out in prizes ? If there is a surplus , what happens to it ?

For a comparison the UK lottery is £2 , so same as the Thai ticket . This week the jackpot is

£ 7.4 million which equates to 318,200.000 baht and the Euro lottery ( £2.50 per ticket ) jackpot is £122 million or 5246,000000 . All of the proceeds are accounted for with a percentage going to charities . The system is easy where you take a lottery slip and cross off 6 numbers or select a lucky dip and hand it to the cashier, or it can be done on line .

There are also scratch cards costing from £ 1 to £5 and with various prizes and they are very popular but not seen in Thailand .

I think they don't have the scratch lottery thing in Thailand for their own good. Same as Casinos and poker machines.

But there are many more tickets sold for those 2 so the chances of winning are much lower, also the 1st prize is shared between winners in those 2 dropping the value of the first prize.

Absolutely true, but the prizes are not shared here

I think scratch cards are more like the lottery but probably they have never heard of them here , not to mention bingo , now that would catch on .

Can you play the Powerball if you are  in Thailand ? because you cannot play the UK or Euro lottery if you are not in the UK . They even seem to be able to detect that you are using a VPN and will refuse any attempt to play .

Unfortunately NO.  Brother buys it for me.  For a commission ...

10% on 1 mill win, 50% on anything bigger.

Good idea , above reply , just hope you can trust him . Does he post the numbers to you , pre lottery draw ? Have you heard from him recently ? ????

Being outside the country should not exclude you from playing the lotteries especially as in my case where they know my UK address , my bank details which include my debit card info that I use to buy additional tickets .

Most trustworthy person I know.  Plays the same #s every 20 draws,  which I check every now & then.  Use to be a site that sold them, at 3x the cost, but don't think allowed anymore.

Won $4 dollars last month ... I can retire in style now.  $6 a week, 1 set of #s drawn 3X a week.

image.png.cfc79c16a3eb1258737fea3bb208c7a8.png

On a 1 mill win, $500k cash to winner, 50k to him or more, as he set the 10%, I was happy with 50%.

Really haven't a clue what would change much if winning the 1 mill, just more for wife & kid after I <deleted> out.  $450 = 17+ m THB.  Buy a nice condo riverside in Krung Thep, or dock a sailboat at Phuket.

If winning a big one, then I'd probably go nomadic, and live in hotels around the world, till bored, but realistically, give most of it away.  Some of those jackpots are ridiculous huge.  $50k to a few friends (5 maybe), and 1 mill to 1 other brother.  More than enough, and doesn't need it anyway.  But he'd give it to his kids  ????  who also don't need it, but would be nice of course.  Options to stop working,  2 would, 1 wouldn't (doc).  Don't really get along with my other brother.

Except for a few frivolous purchases, I really wouldn't have much use for more than a couple mill, at 67, and already done most things I've wanted.  Travelling First Class would be frivolous enough, till bored.

That sounds good--until you look at the odds,   Thai Lotto = 1 million to 1

UK Lotto Odds= ......45 Million -1   .............45,057,474 to 1

EuroMillions Odds = (nearly)  Hundred and forty million 1............... 139,838,160 to 1

Thai Lotto 10 mumbers

**UK Lotto 59 numbers.....

Euro Lotto  pick 5 numbers from 50 numbers then pick another 2 numbers from 12 numbers.

**With the UK it use to be  49 numbers but in 2015 they decided to make it even harder by adding another 10 numbers

Furious National Lottery players have slammed changes to the prize draw as an 'absolute con'--One angry player said it was "clearly a rip-off" and another added "We have more chance of nailing a blancmange to the ceiling (than winning)," according to the MirrorOnline.

If you want to Gamble--the best bet IMO  = Premium Bonds

Winning Thai lottery, wouldn't be much of a game/life changing experience for us.  Pump up the bank account, and that's about it.  Really can't say it would change much at all, maybe a better hotel when out & about, but that's about it.

I wouldn't move to a different house, or buy a different car.  Or bother eating at HiSo restaurants much more than now.   Already got all the toys I want.

Where we go most times, a better hotel isn't really available, or where I'd really want to stay.   That avoid tourist thingy again.

i know someone selling lottery tickets and also that famous illegal lottery numbers.

she told me when she goes to buy the tickets from the thai office, they charge them regarding to numbers. As you know numbers are important in thailand. Also she told me she really goes there early to get good numbers so she can sell. Numbers starts from 20-40 baht for the guys who sell lottery tickets. Its not common but sometimes 60 baht. So the LEGAL selling price to a buyer is yes 80 baht. When the general came to rule he said it will be under serious control. Well actually it was true for a year. Then of course sellers found a way. They stop selling 1 ticket and started to sell set tickets which are like 5-7 of them the same number. And when you ask for 1 they say they cannot break the set for 1 ticket. if break its 100 baht.. lol another lie of course. they can break the set. these set tickets are around 500-1000 baht.

then as usual in thailand these ticket controls suddenly stopped. Now they get back to normal selling both  ticket and set. 1 ticket is now 100.

i remember i met some sellers tried to sell me 120 baht just before the covid. They buy it for 40-60 baht and sell for 100 baht instead of 80
