Abundant garbage and household grease have been found in the sewers in Bangkok’s Huai Kwang area, on the first day of clearing the city’s drainage system by prisoners, to curb the persistent flooding problem especially during the current rainy season.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, who observed the clearing operation in front of a wet market in Huai Kwang, said that he will seek cooperation from households by reducing the discharge of grease from their kitchens into the drains.

He also said that there should be a space to store the grease, so it can be disposed of before it ends up in the drains and, along with garbage, blocks the flow of waste water, resulting in flooding on road surfaces during heavy rainfall.

He also bought the prisoners each a lunch from the market. It was all over Thai Twitter yesterday.

But the Salim run news media don't want you to know that.

He's a genuinely good man, Thailand need more of him desperately.

He also said he wants to stop people selling garlands etc at red lights because it makes Thailand's economy look bad.

A 'genuinely good man' would strive to make the economy better, as opposed to preventing poor people from making money simply to make Thailand's economy look better.

How does garbage get into a sewer line, they are supposed to be a sealed system.

Could be storm sewers vs.  toilet and sink sewers.     People dump stuff down those street drains too.

Grease arrestor in every restaurant would help a great deal .

That would take years to implement .

Especially when you see them pouring the old oil down drains every day

Might want a word with the street vendors who daily tip their waste directly into the drains.

With open grills that when one walks over can almost pass-out with the stench?

Yes indeed!

For reference: a grease/fat berg with garbage blocking a sewer in London (UK)

Seems as though there is no control on businesses to have a grease arrestor installed

He sounds good.........so far!

I go.or went.to a resto. in CM.  It had a pleasant garden part. just off a main road. and the stink sometimes was unbearable.  It all came from the drains.

My mistake, just looked at definition of a sewer and it includes both. I used to design sewers, the sanitary waste type, and never referred to stormwater drains as a sewer.

I live in an expensive street in Lumphini that smells like poo-poo at certain times. expensive-smelling poo-poo. but it doesn't seem to bother the local "hi-sos", I guess because they never wind down the windows of their BMWs or Ferraris ????

In the UK there are regular reports of Huge 'Fat (Grease) Balls' blocking sewers each subsequent one being the largest yet found. Fat balls are a fact of life in modern sewage systems. One of the main maintenance tasks is to find them and break them up. The Thai predeliction for not maintaining anything is the problem here

Actually the oil has a value if there was a system to take the oil and refine it.

Same as waste food can be used and made into something useful instead of being dumped in a rubbish bin.

Do the workers get paid? Are they protected from H2S ? Otherwise the pile, blockages gets bigger.

Maybe better to replace sewage and make it bigger, so they say climate is changing and more and bigger rains will fall.

Would be much better then submarines with no engines or F35's which can only fly with 700 hard- and software faults.
