Thailand to Finish High-Speed Rail Link to China by 2028

BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand plans to complete its high-speed rail system that will connect its transportation to China through Laos by 2028.

 

The government stressed its commitment to the project following a meeting between Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha and Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi this week.

 

The Chinese State Councilor asserted that the "economic corridor" connecting China, Laos, and Thailand will promote logistics, trade, and economic development.

 

According to the Department of Rail Transport, the first stage of the project, which spans 253 kilometers from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima province, is currently 12 percent complete. Officials pledged that the first stage and a test run would be completed by 2026, with the official launch following in 2027.

 

Meanwhile, the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning is conducting an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) on the second stage of the project, which spans 356 kilometers from Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai, where a bridge will be built over the Mekong River to connect with the China-Laos line.

 

The State Railway of Thailand is expected to submit the final revision of the plan for the second stage to the Ministry of Transport and the cabinet for consideration by the end of 2022.

Laos is gonna boom economically.

Too bad it's landlocked.

Had the potential to become the next trendy destination for backpackers and cheap charlies looking for amazing deals and beaches that you can't find in amazing Thailand anymore because amazing Anutin is an amazing dxckhead.

As long as there are strict and long passport and customs checks at Lao and Chinese borders a Hi Speed train makes no sense ...or will this train be only one wagon?

make the transport of Chinese troops, artillery, tanks, and supplies through the countries far simpler, and far faster than now.

It would make for an interesting trip. 

Especially if they could actually maintain a 200 ish kph speed, safely.

Well said. Some people seem to believe China thinks like warmongering west. There is no basis for that.

Beijing is around 2500km from the Thai border. I suppose they could install a bicycle path but a high speed train would be rather more effective.

China will get it done, if it wants to get it done. The question is, at what price to Thailand? Thailand will undoubtedly fail its obligations as it always does and China is perhaps banking on that?

Talking of High Speed trains.......what happened to the much vaunted high speed link between Bangkok and Chiang Mai?

 

It was supposed to cut the train time from approx. 10 hours to approx. 3 hours.  Many wooden sleepers were replaced by concrete ones.

 

It was scheduled to open in 2018.

 

Oh, sorry, I forgot - on the 'test run' (or 'runs'?) didn't the carriage or carriages fall off the line?

 

I'm sure this won't happen this time.

Look at another thread "how old are you"...many here were born close to the WW2 period, still think the Thais must call them "master" and invasions are done with trains.
