Monkey in Lamphun

I was driving up Highway 11 toward Lamphun City yesterday.  I thought I saw a large dog in the road.  Slowed down and tapped the horn a couple of times.  The 'dog' went into a crouch, crossed to the outside lane and jumped about three meters up a teak tree.
That was the first monkey I've ever seen in Thailand.  I find that odd as I live surrounded by national parks and provincial forests but have never seen a monkey in the 15 years I've lived here.

Very strange.  The areas where I saw him isn't a forest or park, so that was rather odd.  About 4 kilometers South of Doi Dtii (Big Buddha) intersection.

Don’t get around much or not observant?  Aren’t there monkeys at Doi Suthep Temple, Chiang Dao Caves and and and?

Must be a little chilly for them up there.  I see them daily down here.  Literally 100s, and quite annoying at times.  Down right aggressive if they think you have food in your hands or bag, as they will attack.

A few that hang out up your way:

The reason that there are very few to no monkeys in the north is that historically the locals ate them all.

Out there on the main highway?

Yep.  In the far left lane and then shot across the road to a teak tree in the median.  It could jump for sure.

@KhunLA
Where do you live.  I know they are plentiful to the point of being a nuisanse in places like Lopburi, but I'm just never have seen on in North Thailand.  I wonder if it was someone's pet.  But now that I've looked up and seen a picture, it looked like a  macaque up in the 15kg range.

Personally I'm not a fan of monkeys and avoid places, like Lopburi, where there are wayyyy to many of them.  Like elephants, the forests are great places for monkeys.  I have no desire to interact with them.  Chipmunks are cute and I like to feed them (in the US).  Monkeys are not cute and I don't want anything to do with them.
However, I didn't want to see it hit by a car either.

Hey, time to sit down evaluate your experience, how high the monkey really jumped, the GPS location of the road, how many trees was there and so on........ Pretty sure you will find the upcoming lottery number there.

I've never seen any at Doi Suthep and I stayed there on retreat for three weeks a decade back.

Me neither. I go up there several times a month and never seen them.  Plenty of snakes, birds and creepy crawlies though...and pigeons. ????
