What is a good alternative to Kaspersky ?

I originally had a "Total Security 1 Device" package 3 years ago.

When it expired I replaced it with a Kaspersky "Total Security 3 Devices" package.  No problems.  It expires tomorrow.
In Central Khon Kaen I asked a computer shop ( Banana ) is it ok to replace with a "1 Device" package, fine they said.
They gave me a "Renewal for Existing User Only" box for 1 device.

 

I have tried to complete the registration process but each time I get a message saying "Error - not the same package.
No refund is allowed on opened box.

Guess I have been screwed

I used " K" for many years , but used the " Internet Security  " package for a single user.

However, due to recent events in Ukraine, I have dispensed with " K " and have gone for a " Bitdefender Total Security Package " 

All reviews rate Bitdefender as highly as " K " and the cost for a 3 user Pakage over 2 Years is about half the price of " K "

Check it out on Bitdefender Thailand website, and also purchase from here if you decide to buy - its legit.

The other sellers are selling older issues cheaper and calling it 2022 version _ beware.!

I run Bitdefender on Windows 8 and Daughter on Windows 11 and the spare is for a Machine on Widows 10 ( when she gets round to giving it an enima.

Forgot can also Secure Mobile Phones on IOS and on Android

Windows 7 is not updated anymore. It doesn't matter which anti-virus program you use. It won't be able to protect you as much as a newer system.

How can a four year old laptop have Windows 7? ????

No antivirus is needed.

 

Do regular backups onto an SD card or another device.

 

Use a browser with a Sandbox if you are going to be clicking on links you feel are questionable.

 

Use a Password Minder.

 

Password protect your Notes or whatever else you are worried about others seeing.

Exactly. Plus an upgrade of the Windows OS. Not even sure if Bitdefender in its newest version would run on Windows 7 but anyway security wise it is nonsense to run such an outdated unsupported OS. Bitdefender may interfere with an android phones functionality. Had to disable it on my older Samsung S9 but for desktop and laptop it is the best choice.

 

And "no antivirus is needed" is nonsense to the square. Ever heard of Ransomware etc. ? A proper backup solution is needed as well. I would suggest Acronis together with an external USB disc (at least one).

Microsoft Security Essentials is good until--ah, 2023. ????

 

Kapersky Security Cloud is pretty light, gets some good buzz. If you know a bit about what you're doing you might easily be able to get away with Comodo Firewall, fairly light, and Ublock Origin guarding your browser, except for AN ads of course. Might harden your hosts file with Spybot Search & Destroy. Besides that, run Malwarebytes Free once a week. You won't find any support here for keeping your Win 7 running, but it still has its fans out there.

Showing an interest in anti-virus suggests a desire to keep the PC secure.

 

With this in mind, running an OS (Windows 7) that has not received updates / is out of support for over 2 years is a thoroughly bad idea.

 

The only realistic solution is to update to a newer Windows. 11 would be logical as it is the newest but 10 would also be suitable.

Non-optimal, I'd call it. Can be done, however, if that's what the OP really wants. Lot of love still for Win 7, so a lot of people use it and continue discussing Win 7 actively in real computer forums. They'll only abandon it when some app they need won't run under 7 and then many will move to Linux.

 

Fact is, if you know what you're doing (don't click on phishing links, don't open attachments from unknown senders, don't download this or that, don't click on ads on porn or gambling sites, etc.) and you use a good anti-virus, browser protection, and a firewall, you're probably going to be as safe as the average naif rubbing along on his Win 10 or 11.

 

MSE has been continually updated and will until 2023, if M'soft doesn't change its mind again. You can also get the extended updates, if one is of a mind, but you didn't know that. OH--those are going to run out, too.????

 

It does, however, earn considerable cred on the forum to suggest Win 11 off the bat for an old computer whose specs you have no idea about. So high tech. Well done!
