snoop1130
BANGKOK (NNT) - Messy overhead cables that have long been a familiar sight in Thailand’s cities are becoming less and less noticeable. The Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry is continuing to work with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to replace overhead telecom cables with their underground counterparts. This effort will reportedly ease internet service providers’ expenses that would otherwise be incurred from rent and cable maintenance. DES Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn spoke of progress in sending telecom cables in the capital city underground. He said he was informed the BMA plans to send several thousand kilometers worth of cables underground under a 20 billion baht budget. He said internet service providers would then have to rent these underground “telecom pipes”. As the internet firms might not be able to afford said rent, the project is not yet being implemented. Trials may, however, be carried out in certain areas. Mr. Chaiwut said his ministry is discussing having the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission and National Telecom Plc. take charge of this matter. He said having state agencies proceed with the project will likely help reduce costs for the private sector and curtail the investment amount needed. He added this idea is being studied and more discussions are needed with the BMA as the agency having authority over the Bangkok area. According to the minister, talks have almost concluded and discussions have been had with many internet service providers. Popular Post jcmj
If the companies can’t afford to rent then they should be out of business. They just don’t want their profits to go down. There shouldn’t even be an option.
AhFarangJa
I thought I read the other day that the BMA stated the removal of cables was to stop. Something about the telecom providers unwilling to pay a percentage of the costs?
swm59nj
Yes. There was an article only a few days ago I believe that said the project has been canceled

Never fear, that will come soon, not big enough, another project to rip up the footpaths, take forever to finish the work, but footpath never returned to it's original state/to an international spec. And another, wires go underground, there's big rains, water gets into the trough and services fail, more projects...

newnative
The way I read it, the article should read 'internet cables NOT being moved underground'. Per the article: He said internet service providers would then have to rent these underground “telecom pipes”. As the internet firms might not be able to afford said rent, the project is not yet being implemented. Trials may, however, be carried out in certain areas. Will B Good
Ain't never going to happen.....just a political sound bite. Even if some do end up underground it will hardly be noticeable in the grand scheme of things.
Thingamabob
I think the word 'not' is missing in this report.
xtrnuno41
Hope they use glasfiber cables instead of the standard ones. Now you can do it right with the newest technology. Or they use te old cables again?
Aussieroaming
I did read elsewhere that 7.9km has so far been buried at a cost of 140M baht, with 2450km of lines still to bury. That equates to approximately 42 Billion baht required to complete the project, not the current budget of 20 Billion, so if that's true then the true cost will be horrendous.
