If I'm travelling between UK and Thailand 5 times a year, would it pay me to buy a one-way to Bkk first, then Thai-based return tickets given the competitive air travel market in Bangkok?

I checked out their prices, not that good.

I know Phucket Air are doing a direct flight to Gatwick for a return price of 22,000 Baht that they don't show. Also Eva Air Evergreen delux is about 38,000 Baht direct, again thats not shown.

Trevor......if you come on effectively a one way ticket every time i.e no outward bound ticket you could have problems boarding in the U.K with your carrier, this assumes your getting the 30 day on arrival stamp which requires an onward ticket......If you apply for a tourist visa you wont have this problem, but you/ll have to factor in the cost of it.
