swerve Posted August 26, 2022 Posted August 26, 2022 I had something similar happen in a high rise building (12th floor). Wind closed a bedroom door and I was locked inside without my cell phone. I lived alone. Something was wrong with the lock and I had to break the doorknob and use it to break the door material/surface around the lock to open the door. Unfortunately the door was good quality. Took me about an hour and a half to do this and my hands were in tatters after. I thought that I may have needed to throw things out a window onto cars below to attract attention to my situation, but it didn't come to that. 555 1

I also live alone and in the brief 10 second time I was outside my condo a gust of wind came in from my condo balcony door and slammed my condo front door shut. The lock mechanism wouldn't allow me to open it without a key -which I didn't have with me. This wouldn't have been so bad as it just meant waiting around for a locksmith to come. The worst part was that I was only dressed in rather revealing underwear, expecting to sneak out and back to the garbage room without anyone seeing so no need to get fully dressed. Without my mobile phone I was forced to go down to lobby reception and organize a locksmith only to be met with the staring gaze of all and sundry passing through! No threat to life and limb as in this story but I could have died of embarrassment! Lesson learned: have key and dress modestly at all times!! Same happened to me many decades ago. I was only wearing a dressing gown, nothing underneath. My then wife did not hear me hammering on the door ( she claimed). Had to hammer on neighbours door. I was in my late twenties then, neighbour probably in her sixties. She opened up, took pity and let me through to her back garden where I vaulted over the party fence tackle swinging ! Not a word from the neighbour then or ever. 2 1
ThaiFelix Posted August 26, 2022 Posted August 26, 2022 He advised people not to have door locks installed in the wrong way - especially if you live alone. I better jot that down somewhere................. 2

swm59nj Posted August 26, 2022 Posted August 26, 2022 Yes it’s always a good idea to install locks the proper way. I have to remember that.. Yeah. I do feel bad for the woman though. Glad she is ok, I’m wondering if anyone actually did hear her screams and did nothing 1

davemos Posted August 26, 2022 Posted August 26, 2022 One could easily smash the door down with the top of the cistern ,a large lump of ceramic . 1

No problem for me as I have a simple latch device fitted to the inside of my 2 bathroom doors with just a handle on the outside. However (and I hope it never happens), should anyone become ill or unconscious inside the bathroom, then force would be needed to gain entry. 2

If she had a water source then she was at no risk of dying of anything but fear. Scary? Yeah. Deadly? No. It could well have been deadly if her sister had not called and got no answer. Fortunately they were able to break into the house, no mean feat with those roller shutter doors which were probably padlocked at the bottom on the inside. Good for the police to be able to get in and rescue her and good for her sister for calling them. 4 1

She had been stuck in the room for 3 days, due to a faulty door knob. Once free, the woman said she had even written a goodbye note to her friends and family. She is now safe. When police arrived, they found the house locked from the inside and had to force their way in. They heard banging emanating from the third floor and found a female inside the bathroom. Chaspul Posted August 26, 2022 Posted August 26, 2022 It is ñot the lock but a thinned metal connecting between handle and tapered flange that fit in door jambe. This break and you are locked in. Seen 3 cases in past 14 years. Only way to free is to force and prise from door jambe. Have written to company (no name) that lock should be fitted from outside using key they provide. So can be disassembled from outside. No response from company. 1
HappyinNE Posted August 26, 2022 Posted August 26, 2022 When I had my house built I paid extra to have no locks on any interior doors. In Thailand these without locks are hard to find and more expensive than with a lock. 1
