Brazen Loei gold shop robbery - Big Joke on scene as policeman caught with all the loot

The 1.5 million baht armed robbery from the Yaowarat Krung Thep gold shop in Lotus, Loei, north eastern Thailand on Friday has been quickly solved.

 

A policeman did it and has admitted to stress after having an argument with his wife.

 

New RTP chief Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat sent in poster boy cop Pol Lt-Gen Surachate Hakpan or Big Joke after what was described as a brazen daylight robbery, reported Siam Rath.

A man had gone into Lotus at 1.30 pm Friday and brandished a Sig Hauer 9mm gun.

 

He escaped with 52 baht weight in gold jewelry worth 1.5 million baht.

 

The armed robber turned out to be Pol Sen Sgt Maj Somphop, 39.

 

All the loot and weapon as well as the clothes worn by the suspect and his getaway vehicle formed the body of evidence against the thieving rozzer.

He is attached to the Erawan force in the NE Thai province.

 

He said he had many debts, had arguments with his wife, felt stress and so in an ironic gesture decided to steal in broad daylight.

Their appears to be no safety net to help poorly paid officers here. They get paid peanuts and so resort to taking back handers and as in this case robbery. Other countries have Police credit unions were they can borrow at very low interest rates but the ideal thing would be to pay a decent living wage.

why so keen to change the way things are done here? be careful what you wish for, you might not be able to afford to live here if Thailand "modernises".

I am talking about Thai people getting the service they deserve and not been screwed by BIB. Not something that particularly benifits me or the likes of you

Well, some would argue that the very nature of their jobs, and the extraordinary amount of protection they have from the authorities, is in essence a franchise. I would argue that instead of the system avoiding the prosecution of cops, they double the penalty, as they are breaching every moral and ethical boundary by their behavior, and these kinds of stunts.

I sometimes after an argument will walk the mile and a half to Lotus for an ice cream cone.   Never thought of robbery as a solution.

The police in Thailand do have a credit union. Who told you they don't? My brother-in-law is a policeman and has bought two pieces of land with a cheap loan. As for being poorly paid, no-one makes them take a job with low pay. It's their choice, isn't it? Many, many people are poorly paid but they don't usually go around robbing shops at gunpoint because of it.
