Daily News Thai Caption: Fears of long term flooding

It has been a year in which the Thai capital Bangkok has been battered by rain and flooding continually for months.

Now residents in the city are being told by analysts and experts on climate change that the situation could get even worse before it gets better.

Daily News reported on the prospects of long term flooding and even heavier rain than previously experienced so far this monsoon season.

Associate professor Dr Seri Suphathit, director of the center for climate change and disaster at Rangsit University said that many areas of Thailand had experienced worse flooding than in 2011.

That was the year of the so-called Great Flood that devastated areas surrounding Bangkok and many outer suburbs of the metropolitan area.

Dr Seri expected Bangkok to experience more long term flooding and even worse rainfall to the tune of 50-70%.

Dr Wattana Kanbua, the director of the meterological division said there were fears of another major storm in Thailand in what remains of October though this may be mitigated by cooler weather conditions emanating from mainland China.

I suppose that as a newly appointed "Director of Climate Change & Disaster", he shouldn't be sounding too optimistic, then? ????

Maybe rain, maybe fine, maybe hot, maybe cool.

What to check today's humidity? Stick a dry noodle outside and depending on how far the noodle bends in an hour determines the percentage humidity. That's about how scientific weather forecasting or modelling is done here.

Thailand's meteorologists rely on models developed by other countries as they have never done their own models and the data in the current models being used is scant as Thailand wasn't the primary area being modeled when they were developed. Thailand predictions were a secondary consideration. Hence why forecasts here are often wrong or just approximations of the days weather.

Interesting.. I have often noticed the difference between Google Weather and what's happening outside.

What is the different between an analyst and an expert?

Amazing how the climate change man was able to tell us about how the weather fo a few months ago cmpared to that of a few years ago.  At least he can read and do subtractions.

So now there are no weather men anymore, only climate change experts and disaster analysts or forecasters.  We all know inflation is stalking the land, it is also stalking titles.  Perhaps all ministers should add the word "sublime" or "extraordinaire" to theirs.  His excellency the sublime minister of health, sounds so much more appropriate.

I think that's more to do with Bangkok having extremely localised weather patterns.  It can be torrential in Phrakhanong but completely dry in Thonglor.  It always amazes me how localised these storms are.

(Of course you do get the occasional monster that covers the entire city, but usually they are extremely localised)
