Thailand's rescue services who work in tandem with the police and other medical services are a ubiquitous sight in the kingdom.

Though sometimes maligned for rushing to the scene of accidents to beat other organisations, there is no doubt that these organizations provide a valuable service to the public.

Yesterday a distraught mother in Pluak Daeng, Rayong, had rescue services to thank for helping her son who had got his foot stuck in a broken drain cover, reported Thai Rath.

The family had been out last night at the annual "Buffalo Races" (wing khwai) and were walking in front of Orawin School.

It was dark and there were lots of motorbikes parked and 5 year old Tharit got stuck.

When Pluak Daeng rescue arrived Tharit was bawling his eyes out and his mum was cuddling the little soul to comfort him.

Taking the matter in hand the rescue team first tried cooking oil as lubrication pouring it down teary Tharit's leg.

This was unsuccessful however as he was well and truly wedged in.

So the rescue team resorted to cutting equipment after the plate was removed and slowly but surely they managed to pry it open so that Tharit could be released.

He was given first aid and taken to hospital for a checkup.
