OMG - Budhist Lent is over - temple party!

Featured Replies

I'm here in Thailand for 2 months, visiting our house in Loei town from USA.  It is about 200 meters from a Wat/monk school.  Now that "Buddhist Lent" is over, there's a big party at the big Wat next door.  Loud speakers, mega bass, search lights, lousy singers ...  It's enough noise to echo off the mountains on the other side of town with a 2 second delay.  This should go on until dawn.

We got up at 3:30 this morning to get up Phu Bo Bit mountain by dawn to see the sunrise.  Hiked up 300 meters in elevation, over 1,000 stair steps I think.  I'm pooped (and 69 years old).

I'm half tempted to drink several more beers and walk up to the Wat and join them as sleep is obviously impossible.   Though I do wish to preserve my hearing and the decibel level is approaching damage level.  I love Thailand!  Some things never change (I first came in 1977, for 3 years).   555!

I did!  What a bust.  Hardly anyone there outside the stage area.  I wasn't going to spend 120 baht to get in, as I peeked around the corner and it was pretty empty.  I only drank one beer while I was there.  I did get a couple smiles.

I encountered one gal who is obviously a hooker or on the make.  Spoke OK English.

Highlight of the trip was taking a shortcut in where the Wat fence fell down in the recent rains.  Saw a fist-sized toad near a street light with my flashlight.  He was there when I came back home.

Oh, a few days ago I landed in the Loei hospital for a night with some bad gut pain.  Nothing really found.  I splurged and got a CT scan - $$$.  But the overnight stay and doctors and nurses and drugs was like $90 USD.  I had a bay in a ward with about 7 other old guys like me.  Was OK.  Two women Docs were great, but a bit mean and full  of business.

We lucked out.  The music stopped about 11:00.  Not enough people to party all night, I guess.

Somehow I love all the random noise.

Farang suburbs back in the West are eerily quiet. They're like ghost towns.

Bring on the late-night village partying and festivities!
