A little-known activist and self-declared red shirt earned media headlines – as well as praise from some government critics – by assaulting Thailand’s “complainer-in-chief”, Srisuwan Janya, last week.

The incident also triggered a heated debate on social media over whether it was justified to physically attack someone for their “annoying habit” of lodging frequent complaints of a political nature.

That was the excuse given by Veerawich Rungruangsiriphol after he violently assaulted Srisuwan on October 18 at the Technology Crime Suppression Division.

The man whom Thai media have nicknamed “complainer-in-chief” was giving an interview to reporters before submitting his petition asking police to charge stand-up comedian Udom “Nose” Taepanich for allegedly inciting street protests during his “Deaw 13” show.

Given the number of coups, which are successful because of the threat to use violence, the answer is obviously yes.

More of it is required from those whose peaceful and democratic aquisition of political authority is persistently overturned by those for whom violence is a profession.

There is no civil solution to their continued aquisition and maintenance of power by its threatened and actual use.

Where was the Crime Suppression Division when Genetal Prayut overthrew an elected government that would be treason under the then Constitution?

Where was ANY law enforcement agency as well as prosecution and the courts whose silence in effect sanctioned a coup (13th after 1932) threatening any public opposition with violence and military trial?

The "annoying habit" of democratic freedom of speech must be far more respected and sanctioned as to its consequences that the current Prayut government is unwilling to respect.

Violence and Temper Tantrums are legitimate in Thai society. Thais watch endless Lakorn melodramas all day every day, where the standard social interaction is slapping, punching, shooting guns, raping women and lots of angry stares........

Cant beat a good Thai lakorn.
