Five tonnes of smuggled pork seized near Cambodian border

Officials from the Livestock Development and Thai border troops have seized about five tonnes of pork, smuggled into Thailand from Cambodia through a natural border crossing in Aranyaprathet District of Sa Kaeo Province by dozens of men known as the “ant army.”

 

Deputy director-general of the department, Chaiwat Yothakol, said that the seizure was made when the smugglers were about to load the pork into a waiting refrigerated truck, parked near the border.

 

The seized pork was later buried at a landfill site belonging to the animal quarantine checkpoint, to prevent the possible spread of diseases, African swine fever (ASF) in particular.

They're checking for diseases that animals catch, as the animals are not alive and this is merely meat, where is the risk?

 

They're not using it as animal feed are they?

 

I've never understood the hysteria about this kind of thing, maybe I'm missing something, if anyone knows I'd love to have it explained to me.

 

Where is the danger here?
 

I suspect it's cheap prices compared to the local market - that's the 'real danger'......

Some of you guys need to Google before you post.   If you raised hogs in Thailand you would want even wild pigs killed.

Instead of following the truck to it's destination and arresting the purchaser?

The cheap prices don't reach the customer.

Thais buy it cheap from Cambodia and sell it at Thai prices for a good profit.

seems dumb way to get rid of but I truly don't know proper safety protocol/checks for animal products to end consumption.

but surely there is a more useful way to utilize it than bury it all.

IMO would have made many of those disgusting tough and chewy balls used in soups and on sticks:

You can just imagine the Ant Army each with a side of Pork 

making their way over the border ,wonder what they took

back over for a return load.
