Queen Sirikit Convention Centre and 19 hotels off-limits to protesters Nov 14th-19th

Protests or public gatherings which will disrupt officials in their performance of duties during the APEC Summit and related meetings, between November 14th and 19th, are banned from the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre and 19 hotels during that period, according to an announcement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

 

The 19 hotels are:

 

Grand Hyatt Erawan

Anantara Siam

Park Hyatt

Rosewood Bangkok

The Okura Prestige

The Athenee

Conrad Bangkok

KIimpton Malai Bangkok

Sinthorn Kempinski Bangkok

Sheraton Grand Sukhumvit

Siam Kempinski Bangkok

So Bangkok

Waldorf Astoria

The Saint Rigis

Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park

Freedom of speech , freedom to protest, but not in places where somebody can see or hear you and certainly not by non Thais and other Governments, as in Thailand everything is perfect.... Sad that everything is so controlled by army, police and Government... And it is fake as the world knows what is going on here already... just not to loose face now.. But there will be a day that Thai people don't accept it anymore.. and than......

Thailand ways of respecting/enforcing democracy, human rights, free speech, free movement .... as long the international media and community don't see it, they can claim they are respecting it... farcical at it's best

Let them protest somewhere where they don't interrupt everything.

That week will be bad traffic for everybody even under best conditions. We really don't need any protesters to make it worse.

Why? do you of a country, any country that is perfect? in more than some countries protestors are shot at and arrested, do you not see the the news?...

yes in Thailand .......They even use watercanons with chemicals...  Block with containers, Should see how they protest in Amsterdam for instance...or France, or USA , the capitol... forgot it??

I Googled the first three; YES, expensive, more than I can afford.

They surely have a point to protest or do you agree that the country is ruined now?? High corruption, high airpollution, slow decision making, no serious investments in traffic education,  but greed  and pocketfilling... and a justicesystem that is gives no justice There is a big need to change

No meeting of national leaders worth it's salt goes ahead without a proper protest taking place.

And what does all of that have to do with APEC - Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation?

 

Sure, there are problems in Thailand, since forever. And they should be solved. But I don't think any (disrupting) protests at APEC time will change that.

 

Thais should vote for competent and honest politicians. That would make a huge difference. But it seems that is not what most Thais want to do. They prefer to vote again and again for the same corrupt politicians and then they are somehow surprised when they have a corrupt and incompetent government. Protests won't change that.

Who pays for all of the hotels? Do individual countries pay there own? Or is it the trusty Thai Taxpayer putting money into the pockets of the big families who own the hotels and the convention center?

So are the penalties for protesting in these areas raised now?  

I think protests at big summits are so the respective reporters from each country writes a story about the reasons for the protests.   It will be interesting to see how things really go.

Some people don't like to be trodden on like dirt.. they do something about it...

Thai MFA pays first, later send bills to atendees accordingly. The whole process takes monthes, some countries play "not received your fax yet". Funny thing is that some hotels refuse to participate for security reasons, but generally its a big deal of money. And corruption.

The police presence in the park this morning was massive. Feel for the chaps wearing the full riot gear.

 

I udnerstand the need for security but the overwhelming presence makes it seem like the government has now real power without force.

 

Lots of BMWs in the neighboorhood, checking foreigners.

 

Thailand's constitution guarantees free spech except, but, if someone decides they don't like what protesters are saying.

 

Section 34. A person shall enjoy the liberty to express opinions, make
speeches, write, print, publicise and express by other means. The restriction of such liberty
shall not be imposed, except by virtue of the provisions of law specifically enacted for the
purpose of maintaining the security of the State, protecting the rights or liberties of other
persons, maintaining public order or good morals, or protecting the health of the people.

Academic freedom shall be protected. However, the exercise of such freedom
shall not be contrary to the duties of the Thai people or good morals, and shall respect and
not obstruct the different views of another person.
