Man extradited from Thailand to Scotland over child abuse images jailed

William Dempster was found to have more than 60,000 indecent images of children before fleeing the country in 2014.

A man who fled to Thailand after being convicted of possessing thousands of indecent images of children has been jailed following extradition back to Scotland.

 

William Dempster was arrested by police in Pattaya in May, eight years after failing to attend sentencing for being caught with 60,000 pictures by officers at his home in Lanarkshire.

 

He was later discovered to have absconded to Thailand before a joint operation between officers in UK and their local counterparts uncovered him living in the beachside city.

 

The 46-year-old was jailed for 18 months and placed on the sex offenders’ register for ten years at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Monday.

 

Dempster, originally from Tayside, was previously arrested in England on charges of “producing, having in possession and disseminating child pornographic material between 2008 and 2013”.

Previously arrested in England for producing child porn. And sentenced to only 18 months after failing to appear and being on the run for 8 years? Just guessing here, but he probably continued his activities in Pattaya. Pretty sure he would have received a longer sentence in Thailand.

But you get caught in England for producing, then caught in Scotland for 60k images, absconds for 8 years, and he's ultimately sentenced to only 18 months!

Just wonder if the Brits will give him back his passport when he's released. Commonsense would say no, but 18 months <deleted>?

Why wasnt he fined for $200,000? Plus 10 years Jail.

I doubt it. "Producing" has a particular legal definition that doesn't include what some posters seem to think it does.

Absolutely will. But he will be catergorised as either; High, Medium or Low Risk. He has to report time spent away from his home address for the duration of his registration period. At the discretion of his offender manager he may be prohibited from flying to certain Countries (certainly The Philippines). If it is suspected that he may fly onwards from his original reported destination, an Interpol Green Notice could be issued.

I knew anecdotally in the US the sentence was much higher, but I actually looked up the statistics;

 

Punishment • The average sentence of child pornography offenders was 101 months; 99.0% were sentenced to prison. • The average sentence for offenders convicted of trafficking in child pornography was 133 months:3  89.0% of these offenders were convicted of an offense carrying a five-year mandatory minimum penalty; their average sentence was 120 months.  11.0% had a prior sexual abuse or child pornography conviction and were subject to a 15-year mandatory minimum penalty; their average sentence was 233 months. • The average sentence for offenders convicted of receiving child pornography was 96 months:  90.5% of offenders sentenced for receiving child pornography were convicted of an offense carrying a five-year mandatory minimum penalty; their average sentence was 87 months.  9.5% had a prior sexual abuse or child pornography conviction and were subject to a 15-year mandatory minimum penalty; their average sentence was 185 months

But any consumer of this stuff is providing the business model for the producers of this awful trade.

 

These guys are not some innocent bystanders, they provide the market for people to exploit children.

 

If you think thats OK, well I hope you can look yourself in the mirror

A lot of it is available for free on the internet , so they aren't paying for its production or making any contribution to it at all .

There was a Court case recently where one of the girls tracked down some of the people who downloaded it for free on file sharing sites and she tried to sue them for damages , as they didn't pay for it and so stole it . 

   I don't think she successfully sued them
