US midterms: Republicans narrowly win back the House

Republicans have secured the 218 seats needed to win a majority in the lower chamber of the US Congress, the BBC's US partner CBS News projects.

The party's majority in the House of Representatives is razor-thin, but it is enough to stall President Joe Biden's agenda for the next two years.

It marks a return to divided government, with Democrats still retaining power in the Senate.

It should have been a big majority, but a win is a win. It's enough to see certain committees vanish, and to slow, if not halt, the Biden agenda.

Hopefully they can roll back some of Biden's worst excesses.   

 

As for the committees and hearings, to be honest I think they should tread easy.  It might look too vindictive to spend months doing public investigations of various scandals and so on.  Better to use the time to press forward with sensible legislation to bring the American economy back on track.  Then let the Democrats look bad when the Senate refuses to table them, or Biden vetoes them.  Simply being obstructionist isn't the path to victory in 2024.

On a more serious note, anything that can put the reigns on Biden's disastrous stint as President must be a good thing for the country. Hopefully he will do the decent thing now and step down.

Hunter will be taken care of by law enforcement hopefully.  If it can be done in a non political way, so much the better.  The DOJ has been getting too involved in political vendettas lately- let local law enforcement handle things if possible. Get him on the gun charges, prostitution, fraud, etc. 

 

The midterms proved that there just isn't the level of vitriol and anti-Biden (Hunter OR Joe) sentiment in the country to match the anti-Trump and anti-MAGA factions.   IMHO it is better to take the high road on this one.

I fundamentally disagree. If Biden steps down Kamala takes over and no matter how bad Biden has been, IMO it'd be nothing compared to the havoc she would wreak on the world. Her pathetic time on the border issue IMO shows that she just can't get important stuff done.

 

It's only 2 years till next elections and Biden's has lost the house, so the best thing we can do IMO is to wait it out with Biden in the big chair.

I don't care about him. He is an irrelevance(other than proving the left really are above the law - the evidence of felony firearms crimes which he admitted to in his book and the refusal of the DOJ to press charges in the years since confirms this 100%). What we really need to do, and do it ASAP is to upend the ridiculous narrative that the Chinese and Ukrainians paid Hunter Biden(who's father was VP) 10s of millions of dollars for absolutely no reason whatsoever. To be forced to accept they did not get any benefit from the expenditure, nor they expect or hope to benefit from the spending is farcical.

 As someone who has had business experience with rich Chinese, they just do not throw away money like that. Let's get Jim Jordan on the case and blow this false narrative up once and for all.

I'd like to agree with you, but I doubt that anything would happen to him if left to local law enforcement. Rich people or people with influential families seem to get away with bad things that the ordinary bloke would go down for.

I guess he could be the lesser of two evils now that he's been neutered.

 

I just wish he'd stop embarrassing himself (and the country) on the national stage. Maybe he could just stop talking, that seems like a fair compromise.

Can you list some of the sensible legislation that Republicans have proposed? I see that Rick Scott proposed cutting back on Medicare and social security. In fact he said they should be subject to scrutiny for renewal every 5 years. Just one of many proposals by Republicans to cut back on entitlements.

You highlight one of the problems the GOP had in the mid term elections. Lack of specifics, specifically.   A lot of people who were at least mildly miffed with Biden and the state of the country STILL voted Democratic, and that is one reason why.    I would like to see: the Student Loan Payoff cancelled, The so-called Inflation Reduction Act repealed for a start.

If there's one thing that pulls overwhelmingly show it's that American support strong government intervention to promote renewable energy. Another thing they strongly support is giving Medicare the ability to negotiate directly with big pharma. So I too hope that the Republicans try to appeal the inflation reduction act.

Most oppositions win by not being the gov. Voters are gun shy. Avg voter is a sheep, you will scare them with big policies.

The rational members of the GOP know that the extremism that had got a grip of the party is losing them votes and motivating the opposition.

 

Those facing re-election in 2024 need to think very carefully about what message they want to send voters in their own constituencies.

 

It’s the extremists who cost the GOP the ‘red wave’.

President Biden has already said that he's open to working with the Republican majority on a wide range of issues.  But he also said that he will not allow the GOP to put federal restrictions on abortion, nor will he allow them to cut social security/medicare.  Thank you Mr. President.

I never understood the American system where you can have a President and House from different political parties. Isn't that a recipe for confusion and misgovernment?
