Twitter hit with mass resignations after Elon Musk's ‘hardcore’ ultimatum

Elon Musk is now facing a new crisis at Twitter as a wave of employees seemed to reject his ultimatum of an “extremely hardcore” Twitter 2.0 or leave the company. Hours after a deadline for workers to check “yes” on a Google form accepting “long hours at high intensity, it seems a large number of employees have rejected Musk’s vision.

 

Exactly how many employees opted for severance over remaining at Twitter isn’t yet clear.

I don't understand it. It's not like Musk didn't offer his employees any extra pay to work 20/7 or provide those working on site with free food while they virtually live there...oh wait a minute...it's exactly like that.

So musk wants to ban remote working but is shutting down access to tw*tter offices…gotta love the irony of that approach.

Considering that the starting salary at Twitter for a software engineer is just north of $150K this sounds very generous. Half a million in severance and out the door.

Is Musk really imposing abusive work conditions ?  or have you exaggerated the response to present a stronger counter argument to Britman suggesting its a good way to get rid of the wokes ?

 

I don’t know the specific details, I also doubt the media is giving a truly balanced and unbiased account of the situation - I also know there are plenty of labor laws that must be adhered to.

 

People may lose some of the perks they believe they were entitled to.

According to reports on the BBC and elsewhere, Twitter has now effectively closed down its premises. All its offices are shuttered.

Supposedly this is only a temporary closure but who knows?

I think he’s being ridiculous. Let’s put staff in 2 categories. The highly skilful and therefore highly marketable who will have other tech companies happy to make a counter offer, including say, some  time working at home, which makes staff happy and can often increase productivity, those staff can leave. The second category who may be the more run of the mill employees, less skilful and marketable, they’ll stay. Outcome - you lose the best and keep the rest. Smart.

Can we give him some time to turnaround the failing company before reaching judgement? Musk will run the company for profit, so naturally some changes will have to be made. I just find it hard to understand how some observers are so upset and angry that staff on $150k a year need free meals. I looked at the Twitter HQ on google maps there are tons of restaurants surrounding. Nobody will starve.

Most people in western countries calculate salaries in annual terms I think. I certainly do. Monthly remuneration is generally referred to as wages unless the recipients are contractors.

I'm happy to be corrected but how exactly was Twitter failing prior to Musk entering the fray ?

 

Who knows how Twitter would be travelling if Musk had of stuck to calling rescuers pedo's but he seems hell bent on turning a large business into a small one...

And now that he owns it, I guess hes allowed to destroy it... sad for the people who enjoyed working there though.

I don't know the nuts and bolts of the cyber industry (see what I did there ? ???? ) to understand if "X" staff is too many, though I'm sure that PayPal had more than a software writer and a receptionist...

That depends. From what I read, about half the staff were contract moderators. Perhaps the previous owner just decided to hire double the staff that he needed and the stock market didn't notice.

as for the chaff, I think a lot of them are engaged in keeping people playing nice.

Personally I think theres too many unkind, scruple less, liars with vested interests around to be allowing them to have free reign and thats without even considering Russia, China and plain old boring criminals.

Without a proper plan on who should leave the company, really? The problem, as you surely know, is that when such offers (or threats) are made, It's usually the good people who leave the company, the ones who can easily get another job because they are competent and efficient. And from the OP, That's what they do: leave!
