Romney basically blew his election because of tax evasion and failing to reveal his tax returns. It';s not just about legality, it's about being a good citizen and proving it.

Perhaps because the law doesn't require him to do so and it's no business of anyone else except the IRS.

I guess that's why all presidents since Nixon routinely do it to remove the stench of corruption. It's not only about tax, it's also about proving you're not in Putin's or MBS' pocket. Voters are entitled to form whatever opinions they wish unless the stench is disinfected by sunlight..

It shouldn't be voluntary, it should be a prerequisite to be a candidate.

but it's not.

Everyone that voted for him should have known he hadn't, but they voted for him anyway. Perhaps they just voted against her ( which is understandable ), and the returns were not important.

I already told you. It's incredibly difficult. There is zero chance it would even be tried on a matter like presidential background checks.

Presidential backgrounds are checked by the press and when a candidate such as grifter Trump refuses to follow norms such as releasing his tax forms, it is judged by the voters as relevant or not.

Is it so difficult for the political parties to screen their candidates? Not at all. It's time for common sense to prevail.

Why would you think they don't? They just don't care and actually abet them to conceal their criminality.

Media watchdogs worry that his free speech maximalism will lead to a glut of “misinformation.” Safety-minded bureaucrats worry that the platform might simply break, endangering a crucial tool for emergency communications. Liberals worry about banished foes like former President Donald Trump, Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene and psychologist-turned-daily-wire-personality Jordan Peterson flooding back to the platform and causing mayhem, making Musk the equivalent of the EPA flunky who shuts down the containment unit in Ghostbusters.

Richest Americans fail to pay $163 billion in taxes, Treasury estimates

The top 1% of Americans are avoiding paying an estimated $163 billion in taxes a year, according to the Treasury Department. That is pushing the estimated tax gap, the amount of money owed by taxpayers that isn't collected, to nearly around $600 billion annually, and to approximately $7 trillion in lost revenue over the next decade, the Treasury Department finds.

Tax evasion is concentrated among the wealthy in part because high-income taxpayers are able to employ experts who can better shield them from reporting their true incomes, the Treasury Department argued in a blog post.

One of the first things Republicans want to do post election apparently, as has been discussed, is find ways to stop or stymie the increase in IRS funding. Classic example of lining the pockets of their rich friends while selling it, along with right wing media, as government overreach and beneficial to the hoi polloi. The hoi polloi Republicans would no doubt benefit from more funds in government coffers for spending, but they will probably fully concur with IRS cuts based on what they are told, but there it is.

Well I hope the long time accountant to Donald Trump keeps singing like a bird until the Donald

gets to see what a jail cell looks like. I guess we will all see just how good or great the US legal

system works. I wonder if this will affect the mass of supporters of Trump?

The increased IRS funding isn't just for the richest population, it's for the working stiffs trying to make it. It's the dems who are the rich ones benefitting from tax cuts.

I guess that's why Trump gave a 2.5 billion tax cut to the rich, to benefit the dems? Absurd.

Despite his statement in Indiana, Trump himself would almost certainly see his own tax bill shrink, possibly by more than $1 billion over time, a New York Times analysis found.

What don't you get? The dems are the largest group of rich.

Link please.

What you should "get" is this

Of the 50 richest families, 28 mainly donate to Republicans and only seven contribute mainly to Democrats.

Clear your biased mind to the truth. Democrats are the majority of the wealthy. Sure the GOP likes tax cuts but the rich dems get the tax cuts as well.

There are more audits overall and I would imagine there would be lots of short simple audits for wage earners, small businesses and such, and fewer but more complex and detailed audits on high income earners, large corporations etc. Working stiffs have little to fear if they have wages and maybe a rental property or some shares.

Whether the big earners are Republicans or Democrats, more targeted audits with highly skilled well paid auditors seems to make sense based on the tax gap referred to previously. Both parties have lobbyists on the side lines who would love a weak IRS so kudos to Joe for doing something.

PS. it's not the law to make them public, though previous candidates have chosen to do so.

Isn't this all rather too late given the GOP control the committees now?

Al Capones were checked as well.  That was until they wanted to make a case against him which they were having a hard time doing up until they looked at the books really hard.  Then it was lights out welcome to Alcatraz.

Well for the Donald and with current testimony you can see where an audit with the true information can scuttle Trumps empire.

Not to late as now Trumps troubles are being reviewed by a special council, which the committee's have no control over.

They held on long enough to effectively prevent a Dem controlled house getting hold of the returns. Mission Accomplished. Balance "seen".

1) The Democrats retain control of the house until January. The court order is for immediate release. Once they're out they're out.

2) The Senate, which the Democrats control also have the right to demand them.

I fully expect Mr Trump will still refuse to release them, no doubt citing that they will be used against him now he has announced his candidacy for President.

Without sounding too much of a conspiracy I feel Donald has outstayed his welcome within the Republican party so Supreme Court .fox( can't bring myself to say news ) plus many others allowing him to get his just rewards. Easiest way for Republican party to not alienate the MAGA crowd ????

For dems best thing for them is to have Trump and Marg tg on the ticket on 24

Trump repeatedly claimed that the reason he wasn't releasing his tax returns  was that he couldn't because they were being audited by the IRS. There is nothing in tax law that says tax returns that are being audited can't be released.  He was lying.  Surprise! Surprise!

and an IRS audit is confidential, is it not?

Not necessarily. If everything is legit, then it's confidential.  If something is found wrong or illegal then "you reap what you sow".  Charges will be pressed which will be made public.

The Treasury Department already has them, this ruling allows them to be handed over to the House Committee.  Trump is powerless to stop them.
