More than 300 road accidents reported with 37 deaths on the first day of ‘New Year’s Seven Days of Danger’

Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) today (December 30th) reported a total of 349 road accidents, with 351 injuries and 37 deaths, on the first day (December 29th) of the ‘New Year’s Seven Days of Danger’ road accidents campaign.

 

Accidents were mostly caused by excessive speeding (41.55 percent), followed by drunk driving (23.50 percent). About 81.51 percent of the accidents involved motorcycles.

 

43.27 percent of road accidents occurred most on national highways. Most accidents occurred between 6:01 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at 9.46 percent.

81 percent of accidents were motorcycles , how many of that 81 percent involved a car ?

Watched a U-turn being made today south of HH into oncoming traffic, driver turning like a turtle and going so slow. The approaching cars had to brake hard and one ran off of the road to avoid hitting the braking cars.  There needs to be more lights on the highway that would make U-turns a bit safer....

All these check points in isaan for several days or longer but it looks like village older men just drink free coffee and water and visit all day 20eters feim the road.  What would be the budget to operate one of these for 10 days.  They don't seem to be in a uniform.   I've survived so far.  There is this one stretch where going the wrong way saves some amount of time.  TIT

Meanwhile I just went through a check point all police on their phones stopping no one  cars speeding through no one looking up from their phones

the days of false information about reality has started again...We will see how good the RTP and Government has done everything for raod safety this year...Incomplete information already

The roads need two lanes. 

 

One for slow

drivers,motorcycles, and donkey carts. 

 

Unfortunately the roads are mostly from the stoneage.

They can have as many "campaigns and road blocks " as they like.

 

Until they start educating the people about how to actually use vehicles safely? This will

just go on and on an on.

 

Absolutely appalling the lives lost on Thailand's roads. The standard of "driving" is absolutely ridiculous. I'm only amazed there aren't even more deaths . They seem to have no idea of how to use the roads safely. U-Turns? Death traps..stop at traffic lights on red? Why?  Overtake in any us lane any time? crack on   drive on pavements, drive the wrong side of the road...I could go on and on.

 

As for the police ? yeah right!

 

I recently got my Thai motorcycle license....that was an eye opener!

 

Drink driving is the norm, speeding is the norm, reckless and crazy driving is the norm in Thailand.  etc. etc. Until they start educating the people, until the police actually do what they are meant to do..the road deaths in Thailand will just go on and on...Alas, I think the Thais will never start "educating" the drivers here...even if they did? I fear its too late now.

I’m thinking of buying a motorbike, never tried on.  I’m 70 and like the speed!   Is this a good idea?  My son is a backpacker and says it’s super fun racing without a helmet.

 

unless it’s life or death, never get on a motorbike in Thailand .    Never.      Never.      Plan without it…..if you can’t figure out how to live without one, move.

Flyover 'u' turns are the safest solution but most likely the most expensive.

What percentage of BIB on traffic duty were looking at their phones?  98.5%?

What a mouthful, first time i hear of such department, they have been trying to reduce road's carnage for many years now without much success as Thai drivers not the sorts of drivers that heed or pay attention and everyday that they get back home alive it's a miracle, specially the motorbike riders...

Perfect idea but even in HH there is no room to build, then as you head south on Hwy 4 the seed picks up and there are no lights until you get to Pranburi. Several major areas in there where people have to cross the one side to get to the other as well, like coming out of Rajabakatti park and wanting to go south, the turn to go up towards Sirvana Homes, then the main road into and out of Khao Tao which right now is shut for all traffic trying to go to Hua Hin and you need to go south and make a Uturn against all of the fast moving traffic going north.....that's where I saw the accident occur. Many people make uturns way to slow and can not judge speed of approaching cars.

The only problem is when that foliage blocks a small side road where a car or bike or dog suddenly appears in front of you...m

In our experience it never does. Dogs are a law unto themselves everywhere. Black dogs at might are the worst.
