Popular Post webfact
by Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - New fare structures for taxis in Bangkok have come into effect, but the Department of Land Transport (DLT) says taxi vehicles will need to have their meters inspected and recalibrated before they can start imposing the new fares. The new fares have been published in the Royal Thai Government Gazette. The starting price for large taxis with up to 7 seats is now 40 baht. The starting price for regular-size taxis remains at 35 baht. The DLT said the new fares can only be implemented after the inspection and recalibration of fare meters installed in some 70,000 taxis registered for service in Bangkok. The drivers will need to contact the manufacturer of their fare meters to receive the required recalibration, then send the recalibrated device to receive an inspection at the DLT’s area 5 office in Bangkok. Only fare meters passing the inspection, which will be officially sealed with lead, can be used to collect the new fares. The DLT will be facilitating this process by providing one-stop recalibration and inspection services for taxi drivers at Bang Sue Grand Station in Bangkok. These services will be provided from Mondays through Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, from January 16 until February 28. Damrongsak
70,000 cabs, wow! New York City has about 20,000. (Though they may have as many as 40,000 "other" for-hire vehicles.) I saw mention of Mexico City having 100,00 but I can't substantiate that.
ezzra
Every taxi service in almost any country in the world resembles some sort of mafia and Thailand is no different, but having used taxis many times i can tell you that the situation is not that bad, it could have been worse, so let sleeping dogs lie i say just keep things as they were... Once again new fares are introduced and meters not yet ready.

Well that makes my figures found on the net cr@p. I guess the DLT will have a better idea of how many taxis there are. From my previous post on the subject: In the time allocated approximately 65,000 taxis can be accommodated. I found two figures for taxi numbers in BKK (100,000 in 2012, Wikipedia and 150,000 in 2019; https://www.covankessel.com/blog/how-to-take-a-taxi-in-bangkok#:~:text=There are more than 150.000 taxi’s in Bangkok, newer Toyota cars and are spacious and airconditioned.). Let me rephrase the question as I didn't realise that you were writing for others 'Do remind us of the last time anyone was inconvenienced' No problem if it takes you some time to consult the others that you were speaking for. A clue -- it was about eight years ago. What a bloody nuisance every eight years. Thank you.
Dazkkk
“Only fare meters passing the inspection, which will be officially sealed with lead, can be used to collect the new fares.” Government announce strange shortage of lead.
PETERTHEEATER
Meters in some taxis have already been unofficially recalibrated to run at faster speed so this is an opportunity to slow them down......????
