Public opinion in Germany is divided and Scholz is said to have been insistent that the US jointly sends its M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine

They really didn't have much choice, having perhaps mistakenly thought the US wouldn't send any. I'm certainly surprised they did, but it seems like the beginning of an escalation to a situation everyone will regret. Having sent a few, the pressure will be on to send more, and more, and more, and the next thing we know the nukes are flying.

Yes indeed. In war both sides will suffer. As I tried to say yesterday, I do not believe the Germans at home are prepared for what could happen, and I suspect the question they ask will be, "why?? how could this happen to us"?

If Germany is under direct threat by Russia then it must defend itself, if it is going on overseas military adventures to get involved in a non NATO conflict to please superficial MSM consumers which has nothing whatsoever to do with Germany then it is so very foolish.

Those same pundits have been threatening the UK with a nuke for months. You are easily taken in by their direct fear factor motive.

Can you explain why the invasion stopped during Trump's term and then resumed again once the democrats got back in office? Is it worth figuring out what deterrent 45 used and copy that? For the sake of mankinds survival.

Odd how Putin would be scared of his "puppet" and emboldened by the dems who we are told are tough on Putin, isn't it?

Uninvolved countries joining a war that has nothing whatsoever to do with them is peak insanity.

Follow the money. Peace isn't profitable for weapon manufacturers.

That's wrong. Western Ukrainians welcomed the Nazis because they kicked out the Russians.

Exactly. The Russians did not welcome the German tanks.

The German Leopard tanks will shorten the war which would otherwise have become a war of attrition.

The Leopards are unlikely to shorten the war. Their main purpose is to stave off defeat during the expected new offensive by the Russians which the Ukrainians have said they don't think they can handle with their currently available weapons. The Leopards will give the Ukrainians battlefield maneuverability to make counter attacks and hopefully not only thwart the offensive but in counter attacks actually take back some more territory.

However, given the nature of Putin and his yes men , they are very unlikely to concede defeat just because the Ukrainians have once again thwarted their plans. Putin is fighting for his own political survival now. Whatever happens , if he backs down he will be in deep trouble.

Like it or not this will be a battle of attrition unless the Russian people rise up and overthrow their government .

Oh Trump, who said Putin was “smart,” “savvy” and a “genius” for sending military forces into Ukraine......lol. Trump was one of Putins favourite idiots.

Trump barely knew where Ukraine was and even once asked then-White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly whether Finland was part of Russia.

Yes I can explain but his own ex security advisor John Bolton can do it better. Look it up

Bolton: ‘Putin saw Trump doing a lot of his work for him’

Perhaps the Israelis know something about the situation that causes them to not support Ukraine. They certainly know a lot about fighting.

Interesting bit about the US needing to take munitions from stockpiles in Israel- perhaps the US is running out of ammunition to send to Ukraine.

What they know, as do lots of other people, the Russians are important players in the mideast, especially Syria.

I think you are a little bit harsh,Germany gave their consent for other countries to send their tanks, that is a big deal.

Russia will not be invading Germany, not a chance.

You will need to understand where Germany comes from, they are responsible for having started two world wars.

I kind of can understand them being hesitant about this but now Europe

is in one line again and hopefully together they will be able to kick the russians back to where they belong.

Thks for your explaination on why Germany wasn't so forthcoming on giving tanks.  And you said there's a history involved here whereby Germany started 2 world wars. Anyway,  Scholz .... did drag his feet on consent for others to send tanks, and on their final agree to send tanks,  it's all good and well to give them excuses, but remember ... Ukrainian's are dying day after day from constant shelling and rockets.  If Ukrain had surrended and let Russia in .... who's doorstep would Russia be on next?  Germany should be greatfull that Ukrain is putting up such a fight.  imo

The concern here is that if plan A fails and Russia starts advancing and taking swath after swath of Ukraine territory .... I hope the US & NATO have a plan B .....

yes i agree but not only Germany,The brave Ukrainians are also fighting our war and we pay for it at the very low cost of a cup of coffee per day.

They are paying with their blood and lives.

We all  should give them all we can that way the world will send a strong signal that bullying like this will not be tolerated.

What invasion would that have been?

There was none when Trump was POTUS and he has been out of power for over 2 years.

Are you claiming that the was started before Trump was in power?

Russia's land grab in Ukraine, using separatists/outlaws, slowed down to a largely static conflict well before Trump's election, and stayed that way through-out his Presidency.  Putin resumed the push when he saw Biden repairing US relations with NATO.

Excellent point. Not only did Trump trash NATO repeatedly, but he also did the same for the EU. He devoted a lot of effort do weakening European unity. He also promised a big and exciting trade deal to the UK after Brexit. And he engaged in his usual infantile name-calling of the leaders of France and Germany. Whereas he never said a harsh word about Putin.

14...quite a comedown from the thousands fielded by their Nazi predecessors. But still making war in Europe...seems like they've learned nothing from their history.

It’s history and the response ie the consequences of the last time this happened in Europe that is driving the response this time it’s just a different aggresser this time. also the German response frees up other countries to contribute
