Thapthim, 57, the Thai woman who fled the US after she hit and killed a 22 year old Michigan student called Benjamin at New Year has returned to America.

Instrumental in the case has been Pol Lt-Gen Surachate Hakpan, deputy commander of the RTP known as Big Joke, reported Siam Rath.

Thapthim was located last week and met Surachate who helped alleviate her stress and told her that returning to the US was the right thing to do both for herself and for relations between the two countries.

Yesterday Thaptim was taken to the airport and put on a plane back to Michigan where she will be met by the FBI to face federal charges related to fleeing the scene of an accident.

She's just daft to return without extradition.

She should have fought to stay here until the bitter end.

Would have taken at least 5 years, if they manage to o it.

Agree it would have taken a few years, but probably may have ended up worse off in the long run?

Giving yourself up voluntarily will certainly be more favorable in the eyes of the court?

She's 57, could have probably avoided it all together.

Let's say 10 years for the federal rap, hardly worth any 'favorable' sentence.

Doubt Thailand even has an extradition treaty with the USA for motoring offences.

Most 'proles' assume an extradition treaty is for all offences, but in most cases it's restricted to specific crimes only.

It'll be interesting to know what the reciprocal arrangements regarding extraditions of fugitive from justice in the US when it comes to Thais who are wanted in Thailand.

Yes, the US have a very rigid system in place which prevents many people from ever being extradited

It looks like she was checking in with China Airlines? So via TPE, and another stop or two to DTW?

Her first port of entry must have been SFO, that's where was taken into custody, I guess she will be transported back to Michigan after a hearing in California.

Mara Schneider, a spokesperson for FBI's Detroit, Michigan field office, told Fox News Digital that Howson arrived in San Francisco on Thursday and is in federal custody. Howson has a bail hearing on Feb. 28, according to Schneider.

Article 2 of the US-Thailand Extradition Treaty talks what offences apply.  Basically it boils down to most any offence which is against the law in both countries.  Killing someone with your car (or a gun, ball bat, axe, knife, karate punch, whatever is used) is definitely against the law in both countries.
