UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is to fly to California later to discuss key details of a new defence agreement with his Australian and US counterparts.

The 2021 Aukus pact aims to counter what the three nations see as China's threat in the Indo-Pacific region.

At the time, China condemned the agreement as "extremely irresponsible".

The meeting with US President Joe Biden and Australian PM Anthony Albanese is expected to agree the supply of nuclear powered submarines to Australia.

Speaking ahead of the talks in San Diego, Mr Sunak said the UK's global alliances were "our greatest source of strength and security".

During the trip - Mr Sunak's first to the US as PM - he is also set to unveil the UK's new integrated review of defence and foreign policy, which have been updated after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

So for revealing new military and foreign policy he is flying to the usa, and not presenting it to parliament first for discussion and critique?

How much he values the parliament with elected representatives in his own country to politicians and military generals in a foreign country?
As he was not elected to his post by popular vote, he is stretching his position. That lapdog position will be judged against Tories.

This is obviously written by Communist supporters for China.

It suggests 'appeasement', "don't provoke China", and we know, after the last World War, how effective that is.

 

I still have scars from the bombed out housing estates after the last experience of 'appeasement' that was Chamberlain's "Peace in our time".

 

Sadly for us the only viable response to interstate bullying on both sides of the world is to stay strong and build an effective, forceful stepping up of regional defence.

That is exactly what is happening now on both sides of the world.

The reply to our response from the countries that are now aggressive is the same; namely 'you are provoking us', 'we are being attacked', 'we must defend ourselves', 'we want respect', etc etc.

 

There is always a percentage of people in the West who will buy into this rhetoric and quote it against our defence activities.

Just pray that our government's defensive strategic initiatives do not deviate as a result or you too and your children may carry the scars.

 

Anything that helps to stem the aggression of China in the Indo-Pacific region is a good thing.

 

Hopefully Biden will do us the honour of learning our PM's name this time. Referring to Rishi Sunak as Rashid Sanook really does not instill confidence in his cognitive functions. Come on Joe, it's only 2 words. Not too hard to remember.

What an empty cheap shot. Biden has confronted the Chinese far. far more strongly than any previous administration since Richard Nixon's tenure. I guess you must be desperate to find any grounds for criticism.

Trading with China was Kissinger's idea to win the cold war by letting China get a taste of the good life economically. It helped. Now the west needs to play good cop bad cop. China wants to be belligerent then they don't get to eat at the economic trough that has made them since Nixon.  Some cold winters are ahead for Chinese.

The issue has been discussed in the House. 

 

Whether Sunak was under a moral obligation to call a general election is obviously down to subjective opinion, but he was under no legal obligation to do so.
