About 30 students at a school within three kilometres of the foundry where a metallic cylinder, containing caesium-137, is thought to have been melted down, have fallen sick, most of them have with a high fever, cough and runny nose, as the radiation scare intensifies.

The provincial administrative organisation has ordered officials concerned to assess the condition of the sick students and to report immediately to doctors at Kabin Buri district hospital if any of them develop serious symptoms.

Teachers at the school in Hat Nang Kaeo sub-district have reported that some of the students have missed classes because they have high fevers.

First thoughts were mass hysteria......but I guess not with those symptoms.

If only there was someway of finding what bacteria/virus might have caused their illness...........I guess we'll never know.

And they said there was nothing to worry about....best get the iodine tablets the Russians may have on them to give to the students.

You'd think local doctors would have been alerted by this alone, its possible one of the foundry workers wife's does his laundry, and then cooked the school lunches, cross contamination is perfectly feasible.

That's only for radioisotopes of iodine, because iodine is concentrated in the thyroid during production of thyroxin. Give a massive dose of non-radioactive iodine and it outcompetes the bad stuff.

Iodine doesn't compete with cesium for anything, so  it has no effect on Cs uptake in humans. Cs is more or less evenly distributed around the body.

Can you understand sarcasm...

The article says the students have fallen sick with symptoms of "a high fever, cough and runny nose,"

I have read a few articles on radiation sickness and none of them mention a cough or a runny nose as symptoms.

The air pollution is killing in eastern Thailand. I hope that caused their malaise!

These are not the symptoms of radiation exposure, not at all in any way, ever.

Sound like symptoms from the bad air.
