Koh Samui Residents Hit By Water Shortage For Months

RESIDENTS of Koh Samui’s Bophut subdistrict turned to the media for help after suffering water shortage for four months now with tap water either not flowing at all or flowing weakly and it is also salty, Naewna newspaper said this afternoon (Apr. 5).

 

They added that they had complained to the Provincial Waterworks Authority several times but the officials have still not been able to concretely and permanently solve the problem.

 

This problem comes at a time when tourism at the world-famous destination has revived after the Covid-19 pandemic eased. Both Thai and foreign holidaymakers are flocking in but water supply shortage will have a negative impact as hotels and other rental accommodation, shops, restaurants and tour operators are also affected.

Samui has water shortages every year at this time.

Yet, inconsiderate owners still keep watering their immaculate lawns, and washing their big expensive cars.

The super-duper undersea over-priced and underspec'd pipes were supposed to resolve this.

Guess what?

Fail.

 

PS Because of the drainage system that has been installed, rain water runs into the sea instead of leaching into the aquifers.

No more flooding like it used to, but this is the price.

Because the aquifers are running dry, sea water is seeping into them.

Result - salty water.

Yeah we used to do that too until we saw somebody letting a soi dog get a drink from the filler hose......back to bottled.

Thus the benefits of living in a gated 'village' with no dogs allowed loose. That said, the person with the machine is next to the usual open Thai drainage/sewer, so what I make up for in money usually is offset by fly annoyance !

And they – the resort- and tourist business owners – wants bridge and more airplane arrivals, so more people can come to the island and use water and other infrastructure already in shortage...

Instead of ramming more and more tourists onto this island above its carrying capacity the government should focus on sustainable tourism..

But greed,corruption and stupidity is the meta at present .
