Republicans aim to disrupt general election debates amid Trump complaints

As the former president threatens to skip first Republican primary debates, party leaders are working to remake the system for staging general election debates next year.

Top Republicans summoned the bureau chiefs of the five major television networks to the party’s Capitol Hill headquarters this spring for a secret meeting aimed at breaking the country’s 35-year-old system for presidential debates.

With everyone in the same room, the Republican National Committee’s leadership wanted to know if the networks would agree to broadcast 2024 general election debates that were sponsored by a third-party organization other than the Commission on Presidential Debates, according to six people with knowledge of the meeting, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

As usual, an attempt by the GOP to legitimise Trumps lame claims.....

Isn't this story just about Trump wanting someone other than the Commission for Presidential debates to host the meetings ?

Trump would like someone else to host the debates (as he felt the previous hosts were biased towards Biden)?

It’s the Republican way, they want to choose which Americans can vote, wanting to choose who runs debates is no surprise at all.

Well you have to figure out a way to avoid embarrassing questions like what policy ideas you have or being taken to task on any failures or criticisms those kind of pesky problems basically an attempt to control it and if not just don’t participate

That is a cynical way of viewing the matter .

Trump wants other platforms to broadcast his views , in an attempt to attract more voters for him

Naaa he wants to control the questions and propagate his usual lies and btw why pray tell are you so concerned about him when you aren’t even an American?

And fact checking would be prohibited.

Sounds like they know they can't win.  Someone on that side thinks controlling the debates might give them a chance.

You can't put this completely on El Tangerino as both Romney and Ted Cruz have complained about fact checking and not having hard right moderators in previous campaigns.

What the GOP needs in their debates is someone who is completely out of it, like Marianne Williamson, just for the sake of entertainment value.
