Where would you retire -- if money wasn't an issue?

I would have a condo in Jomtien and the Gold Coast , Australia  --   and would visit Syd

I'm so thankful I've got the few friends I've got now I'll be even more thankful if I have the same friends when I'm 70+. I'd make sure they're well taken care of. 

 

Pus I would go out of my way to make someone that has to grind out a living smile every day. i.e. a good tip, a joke, a small gift, etc.

I was working in Singapore when I retired & could easily afford to live there so I guess (Visa Issues Aside) I could afford to live most anywhere

 

Also had a Filipina GF of 8 years & we’d built a house in Davao.
 

But at the end of the day when it came to retiring (technically 18 months before as I was already renting a condo in Bangkok) I picked Thailand because I love the place (warts & all).
 
If I win the lottery (had a go on the UK one yday whilst visiting my parents, didn’t get a single number) I’d still choose Thailand

House with aircon garage  near Pattaya for winter , and apartment with aircon garage  near Cannes or St Tropez for Summer   simples

Mostly likely Majorca, buy some land and build an off-grid storage container villa, elevated with sea views for Mar through till Oct. Oct to Mar, then back here in Jomtien. Plus a couple of F1 weekends (Melbourne, Singapore & Silverstone) a year and the Rugby World Cup and Lions tour every 4 years. Couple of mill would easily cover it.

But truthfully my wife & I are very happy as is with not much money but a great home paid for in our current country & a paid for home in Thailand where we visit 3 months a year.

 

Almost every day though we ask ourselves would we like to go back to full time in Thailand & in many ways we would (We previously lived full time in Thailand from 2011-2017)

 

But as it stands we live in a beautiful mountain setting here at 4000' elevation & temperatures are always between 13-23c & crystal clear air quality AQI averages under 10

 

Again we are not rich but happy. We are not sure why we even question going back to full time in Thailand...

 

I guess family & there is always something we miss...albeit much we also do not miss too...Immigration,bad air, dangerous roads,heat 555

1. Buy a very upscale and off-grid ready (solar panels, batteries) RV and spend a good 5-6 months a year travelling North America. Mostly the west and north though. Perhaps spring and fall.

 

2. Summer months in Toronto for a taste of home, plus live baseball and chance to see NFL as well.

 

3. Winter months in Penang. Great weather, perhaps the best food culture in SE Asia, interesting and walkable streets.

Road safety? I've been driving here for years, I don't find it particularly irksome. Indonesia is about the same, except maybe slower. ????

# 1 & 2 work for me.  Scratch #3, and just do the inter'l upscale hotel circuit if bored on the road.  A few art museums & viewpoints I wouldn't mind peeking at.

There are some pluses. Room cleaning, pool, gym, breakfast, wifi, tv. Provided the room is sizeable it is a good way to live. I have been trialing it at a budget level up to 1000 baht.

We did do this for a year........during covid lockdown we were the only guests in a 5* resort in Pak Chong...illegal at the time.

Illegal? I went all over Thailand during the lock down travelling on my motorbike. Just a few places had lock downs as far I know in Thailand related to factories and markeds
