Driving lisence renewal - walk in's avaliable?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

 

Want to renew my driving lisence from the 2 year to 5 year one.  

 

Was on the booking sites but they're all full in the Bangkok area until end of June or July.

 

Does anyone know if they allow walk ins currently or is it by appointment only?

IIRC, the booking system was suspended and it's only walk-ins now.

I renewed mine earlier in the year and it was walk-in then.

I did have to take an online test and take a picture of the QR code to say that I had passed.

I did mine for 5 years in april.

didnt book. walk in. But i watched the 1 hour video online and kept the QR code it gave me.

 

went there at 7.30 they started to take in people who has bookings. So i would say i waited around 2 hours for my turn. When you enter the door tell or show the QR code to the lady sitting on the right (giving queue numbers) that means you watched the video. So they will give you a different queue number (i think white color) to skip watching the video. they will take i think 550 or 505 baht. cannot remember. i waited my turn probably another 30-40min. Did 3 tests about color, reflects, eyes. Took my photo and waited another 20min. All done

 

so no need booking but if not you will wait probably 3-4 hours to do all. went there 7.30 done around 11:45

I did my renewal TDL on Wednesday of this week at Chatuchak transport office.

 

Enter the building immediately turn right an past those doors press ticket machine select foreigner.

 

You are seen very quickly.

Note this visit is just to make the appointment.

I was offered various time for the next day and selected 9am the following day.

To make appointment you need the following. 

1. Thai drivers license (mine was expired 3 moths previous. That is no problem.

 

2. Certificate of residency

 

3. Medical certificate. Note there is a clinic that does this specific service at entry of land/transport complex. 150b 

 

4. Basic copies from pp. 

Photo page.

Most recent entry stamp. I also provided reentry permit page.

Page with your visa. 

In my case that was first page of my current pp where the visa info.

 

5. Passport. 

 

Note: You do not need to do the online eLearning course that provides q code. 

They clip the pages together and a coloured ticket with a stamp.

That's it. Simple.

 

So the next day (yesterday) I was back again for the test.

You go into same office obtain ticket (same as bank system) 

Short wait. They give you que number.

You then follow counter instructions to where you hand over your papers where they are checked again.

Then follow instructions to area where you watch short video.

It's purely instructions for the "physical/eye test"

Test is very basic.

Colour test etc

 

After that back to where instructed to have pic and actual TDL card.

505baht.(Lady would not accept tip)

 

Zero need for an agent.

You still need two trips.

You are ok up to a year after it expires.

Indeed.

Also as most are aware ...your new 5 yr license expiry is 5 years from your NEXT birthday.

In my case that meant 5years and 9 months.

Do the "DLT e-learning" to get a QR code (certificate).

Saves you from sitting/watching videos at the office (which might be a bottleneck).

Only physical tests and taking picture.

Not my experience yesterday at Chatuchak.

The QR code saves nothing.

 

The process at that Transport office still has you sit through shortish video where the steps in the physical process is outlined.

You cannot "skip" that.

Not what I refer to. The video is a lenghty thing similar to the online training.

When I did a licenses from scratch it was a PITA. Crowded room, tiny screen, blurry age old videos. More than an hour.

Never saw that instruction video for the physical tests.

At our office it's just good old explanation by the officer.

One was the DLT e-Learning

 

I specifically asked the fella doing my paperwork if I needed to do this and have it for my appointment the next day.

He replied NO NEED..

 

Perhaps it's required for first license.

Does anyone knows of a medical clinic near the DLT at Sukhumvit Soi 99 (Bang Chak BTS), as that is close and easiest office to go to.

There's one across the road at the foot of the stairs to the BTS station.

Had a 2 yr TDL and renewing to 5 yr

It varies.... last time I renewed my 5 year DL I had to sit through the longish moronic video which describes 3 Thais... Khun Suay, Khun Jai-rawn and another I forget... the video goes on about the ‘driving habits’ and how to be relaxed like Khun Suay and not dangerous like Khun Jai-rawn... the video is about 50 mins long..... 

 

Experiences may vary since covid.... and doing the online stuff (since covid0 may well mean people avoid that longer video....  meanwhile the shortish video maybe a recent addition or even a local addition at ChatuChak DLT... I’ve never seen this ‘shorter’ video at DLT Area 3 (nr Suk 99/1).

 

Anyway Op... Get paper work in order, do your online stuff, get the QR code, rock up and take your chances as to whether you’ll be seen that day or have to make an appointment... 

If its busy you may be asked to come back another day (following day etc) or you may get lucky if you get there at about 8:30am.

The OP stated "Bangkok Area" .

Chatuchak DLT is on BTS (Mo chit) and also MRT Chatuchak.

He also stated there appointments online booked out. 

 

 

I outlined process earlier for  Chatuchak DLT..

And yes walk in for making a booking is an option. 

The e-learning Q code not required.

 

Also For the booking appointment I was in and out in 30 mins.

The next day the actual license in and out one hour.

I parked directly opposite Building 4 both days. 

Pretty simple.

I used to do mine in BKK and it was never less than 3/4 with all the waiting around. Then I discovered that you don’t need to renew at your nearest office, you can go anywhere. Last year I was in and out of Cha Am in about an hour.

As far as I’m aware they’re open every weekday, don’t know about Saturday

Just spoke with a friend who was there last week and confirmed walk ins only

for the medical certificate the Red Cross in Hua Hin does this for 100 baht.
