Pregnant woman injured by hot oil declines 4,000 baht aid, calls for more accountability

A pregnant 37 year old woman was severely burned by hot oil while selling French fries at a local football match in Rayong province. The organisers offered 4,000 baht as compensation but the victim, Suchada Phusawangporn, refused, calling for the culprit to take greater responsibility. Local authorities are investigating the incident.

 

Suchada, who is three months pregnant, was serving French fries from a tent at a football match organised by The Smiling Chicken Team. An errant football accidentally landed in the hot oil frying pan, splashing Suchada’s face and right arm with boiling oil. Her injuries, including swelling and inflammation in both eyes, have left her fearing that she may lose her sight permanently, which would impact her ability to care for her two children and unborn baby.

 

Following the publication of the incident, the football match organisers invited Suchada and her family to meet with them at the stadium. They offered 2,000 baht in compensation, while the abbot of the local temple, Wat Namkok Mai, contributed another 2,000 baht. However, Suchada and her family declined the money, believing it would not cover the costs of her medical treatment. They sought a more considerable contribution and responsibility from the person who kicked the ball.

Did she speak up at the start of the day ? did anyone recognise the risk ??

 

I see an incredible amount of stupidity here in Thailand on a daily basis and when something happens the wrong people are always blamed.  Everything seems reactive, there is little proactive thinking.

Anyone with a brain could identify the risk here (boiling oil at the side of a football pitch).

 

The organisers are at fault for allowing this - this is nothing to do with any of those playing football. 

 

I see dumb stuff like this all the time...  At a recent football tournament I saw a lady playing with her baby very close to the goal... It was concerning enough for me to mention something and point out that a wide shot could her her or her baby, or worse.....  I was then the ayhole for suggesting she moved, she was dumb enough to have no idea at all.

Recognize the risk ?  In Thailand ?   Good luck with that. The Thais have the spatial awareness of a boiled egg coupled with an outlook that accidents are events that happen to everyone else but not me.

 

Masters of shutting the door after the horse has bolted and even then allowing it to swing open again once the hulabaloo has died down.

In Thailand it is always, always someone else's fault. It is impossible for them to take responsibility for anything. It's part of the culture. In my nearly three decades here I have seen it happen only once, when a dog ran out from a house and bit me and the owner took me to a clinic and paid the bill.

I'm reminded of an incident in either 1960 or '61 when Everton came to the Boleyn to play West Ham. Pre match 'goalkeepers catching practice' and  Roy Vernon ( Everton) let a thunderous shot go, it went wide and completely sparked out a poor guy standing in the front row of the crowd. So, his fault for standing there or Vernon's fault for kicking the ball wide? I'm sure if the guy's mates had told him not to stand there he would have considered them ayholes too.
