A 14-year-old boy has been found dead in the backyard of his grandfather’s house. He is believed to have committed suicide after attacking the old man with a knife, for refusing to give him money to buy cannabis.

The tragic incident took place in Kut Chik sub-district of Thailand’s north-eastern province of Nong Bua Lamphu yesterday (Sunday).

According to the accounts given by neighbours, the old man sought help from them late on Saturday night, claiming that he had been attacked by his grandson as he was asleep. Seriously injured, he was rushed to the nearest hospital with numerous knife wounds to his head and face.

very sad and tragic event, smoking cannabis at 14, what could possibly go wrong  !

Thailand was so wrong with the legalization....  what's this place gunna be like in 20yrs,  it'll end up like it is now with every motorbike kid has a gun under his seat, you'll see every motorbike kid with a bag full of weed high as a kite riding on the roads.

Ridiculous decision. imo

Every morning I go to a nearby reservoir to exercise, it has a track around the lake for joggers and multiple exercise machines for the locals to use.

Every morning now we see young Thais, both boys and girls sitting around the park, drinking and smoking cannabis.

This year the increase has become very noticeable.

Did they ever tried to harm you in any way?

That's not the point ....  do you really think society needs kids smoking pot in parks at 14yrs old instead of getting an education ?  You don't see that happening in Singapore...

The point should be rebuilding family values not making cannabis legal or not... when it was illegal people still used it... just look at yabba... illegal but prevalent in the THAI society... The point should be finding out why and working to fix that...  maybe take a look at the deterioration of family values for instance... o9r military coups... or social media.

Kids are not allowed to buy it. What do you think about 65+ year old smoking it, jail time for life?  You mentioned Singapore, Why didn't you move there instead of Thailand,  couldnt' afford it?

Are you really that naive ,  you think the kids can't get the 20yr old brother to buy it for them.  You think it's all good for teenagers, kids, young adults to be sitting around smoking cannabis all day.

I just can't get my head around how you think drugs are ok for society as a whole.

how could you possibly think it's ok?

Same as their older brothers and sisters could buy tobacco or alcohol for their younger siblings, who is naive?

Seems a good thing.

The kids are outside, socialising peacefully with their friends, out in nature by the lake, doing no harm to anyone, and getting the medical advantages of the weed.

What's this hang up you have on cannabis?

I'd much rather have my kids using it that drinking alcohol, smoking tabacxo, or doing other kinds of drugs.

It does not have a negative affect on society, it more healthy, had some health benofits, and not addictive and does not cause people to get violent.

You should switch your efforts into banning alcohol rather than weed.

Reading the comments on this subject it seems that every pot smoker thinks cannabis is harmless and reacts  aggressively to anyone with a different opinion. I might be mistaken but isn’t cannabis supposed to make you happy and peaceful.

if the parents are proper parents and responsible parents they won't let the son out hanging around kids smoking or drinking, he'd be in his room doing homework getting ready for dinner.  Sadly, Thailand lacks proper parents, very few act responsible.

*notice I mentioned ... smoking & drinking.

you said do you really think society needs......

in society there will always be mind altering substances. it is up to the individual or parents (for youth) to become educated and responsible about said choices.

so ..........

thailand lacks proper parents.....is  an indication of the society those kids are growing up into.

And that is the problem

Regardless of what one thinks of drinking or drugs the Thai youth did not need yet another reason to sit around doing nothing but getting high till they need money they don't have. Then needing to do things to get that money & that is usually not working for it.

Thailand needs more heroes not more zeros

We're always advised to wait for the results of the investigation before jumping to conclusions.

I'd like to see the results of the autopsy, especially cause of death and a drugs panel.

Cannabis still isn't as inexpensive as methamphetamine. It is illegal to sell cannabis to someone under 20 YO.

Arguments over money are probably 1A or 1B here as excuses for violent behavior, Love being the other.

Given what I perceive to be the rural location, I'd submit that cannabis was always available; locally grown, low potency. I doubt this lad was venturing to the nearest dispensary.

If forced to jump to a conclusion I would guess methamphetamine (use/abuse/withdrawal) is more likely as the drug causing this sort of violent behavior.

from the linked article...

The police searched the boy’s room and found equipment used to smoke cannabis.

So he had what, a lighter, rolling papers, a bamboo bong (which can be used to smoke other things). Note that there is no mention of actual cannabis, which I guess makes sense if he didn't have any money to buy some.

I'm certain the authorities will track down the source of the cannabis and prosecute the seller for illegally selling to someone under 20 YO.

There has been a lull in the scary anti-cannabis "stories" (fan fiction?) lately. Interesting to see an increase now. They need a really big story to close the deal.

Perhaps they see the truth that others refuse to acknowledge, and the inconsistent approach applied to substance laws.

1. Alcohol is addictive, and kills over 3 million per year globally. Perfectly legal.

2. Smoking cigarettes is highly addictive and kills over 8 million per year globally. Perfectly legal.

https://ourworldindata.org/smoking

3. Cannabis is not addictive, has never killed anyone, yet this naturally growing plant is illegal.

https://www.drugfoundation.org.nz/matters-of-substance/archive/october-2017/cannabis-causes-32-deaths-each-year/

Cannabis can cause harm, but so can most things consumed to excess. Sensible regulations should be formed to allow people to use this plant as they wish.

It has been reported that the young man hanged himself.

who had just attacked his grandfather with a cleaver before hanging himself from a tree.

No word that I've seen re: drug testing results.

It was also reported that

Police later found a marijuana bong discarded on his bed in a hut near the house.
