MOVE FORWARD LEADER/PRIME minister-designate Pita Limjaroenrat will likely be given a second chance to rise to power if he fails at the first go, according to newly-named House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha.

If the Move Forward leader/prime minister-designate eventually fails to get enough support in the first round of votes by MPs and senators in a joint House/Senate session scheduled for next week, he will likely be given a second chance to go for it in the following week, Wan Noor confirmed.

Pita will need yea votes from more than half the combined total of 500 MPs and 250 senators or at least 376 votes in accordance with the military-designed constitution. Given a combined force of 312 MPs attached to eight coalition partners, the Move Forward leader will need at least 64 more votes from among non-coalition MPs and senators.

Each Senator will have to decide that they want to deny the will of the people.

~ 313 from 500 is an electoral mandate which cannot be ignored, or rejected by unelected "Senators", because they don't like some platform issues they ran on, and were elected for.

When/if Senators reject Pita as PM, two or more times, then they should each publicly justify their decision.

They will quote MF's intention to reform 112. It's inviolable in many of their minds

Surely they wouldn’t be stupid enough to deny Pita the chance to be PM?

If they succeed than it is not stupid....if they fail it is stupid

They don't need to "give him a chance: he won it fair and square.

Get over it.

he did not win enough to decide alone....you need to have >50% of the MPs...they have 151 of 500 and >50 of the MPs+Senators.

Everyone who has that is democratic correct elected.....Like here the majority were for the speaker...

If the majority vote for some PTP guy than PTP won this vote.

Thailand vote parties not Prime Ministers in elections.

Is it “blind “ votes by the MP for the PM position , like they did for the deputy speaker position . If that is the case , the country will not know the yea , nay , absence or unreadable votes by the MP.

No, each MP must stand when called and name his choice.

I'm not sure about the senators

Understood.

So I would question them that this also means no law can ever be reformed? Or only some laws can be reformed? That would be challenging to defend.

It's kind of silly though because reforms would not pass the National Assembly, given the lack of a majority.

A lot of moving pieces. The EC could void Pita (slim, but not none) before July 13. Anutin will be nominated, and he could easily win (188+250). I think Prawit is sidelined given his new nickname with the public "Sleepy", although he is the sentimental choice and it would be payback for his loyalty.

Failing on a first vote means a second vote would fail as well, I can't see what might change between the two votes. Senators will not cave to protests, IMO. I guess Srettha would be nominated after a failed first vote? But I'm not sure he'll get enough Senate votes?

I think a better plan for the powers that be would be to let Pita become PM, but then chip away at him and his coalition hourly, making it impossible for them to accomplish anything. Then bring a EC or CC case or three. And the CC could just force him from office like they did with Yingluck, citing some obscure legal "precedent".

If the senators won't vote for Settha, then PT won't vote for Anuthin as PM or join his government .

Thus he would run a minority government doomed to fail. I can't see him doing that.

If not Pita, then the senators must choose Settha, unless..... MF is dissolved and all its MPs banned.

But then the effluence would surely hit the fan

the + senators is the operative word here.

Of course you need to have a majority, that's why coalitions are formed. But I have yet to see a headline " Pita cannot form a majority coalition, all I hear , he might have owned stock in a media co. He is violating Lèse-majesté, bla bla bla.

They will be forgiven, if the military backed senators back down, and don't cause problems. The army owes that to the people, after 9 plus years of devastating results. If Cha Cha is the tiniest bit sincere about not interfering, the last year of their time in office needs to be revoked immediately. Let the people make the decisions, not highly corrupt, totally compromised men who have sold their soul to the heinous, toxic army.

Not sure how much we can do as ex-pats, but something needs to be done to tame these goons. They must be brought into line, or pay a very, very heavy price, for their absolute repudiation of democracy. They are now starting to behave like fascist goombahs. Let us attempt to show them what a very miserable life looks like!

Go, Pita, go. We are behind you, proud of you and trust in you. You are giving us real hope, for a change. Let us hope these greedy, toxic, moronic, backwards, incapable nitwits get the message, and back down. If they do not, if they use the EC, the courts, or their power to prevent Pita from becoming PM, it could result in real disaster. It could be the end of the Thai army as we know it. If they order the soldiers to put down the protests, there could be a mutiny much worse than we are seeing in Burma, where tens of thousands have defected already.

The old style government people are scared to death.

They will finally have to defend what they have been doing in the past.

The courts will be very busy and a lot of people will be moving out of the country along with suitcases full of money.

Believe me,for the past two months the former pm has been like a duck in the water. Not much movement on the surface but peddle like crazy under water what can not be seen.

Go Pita Go get them!

The crown property act was changed by the current government, so why not his one?

because the current government wasn't in the news with anti monarchy rhetoric.

No one would oppose changing 112 to something better than now.

As bad as the senator construct is, that is not one block, that are individual people with different ideas. And I am sure they are mostly well meaning, but very conservative. Some things MF said was very anti monarchy....that makes many people upset in Thailand.

Some economic ideas are between nonsense and damaging socialism.....That all doesn't make friends with the conservative senate

Like enough pockets being lined

That is the way it used to be,hopefully this time it will be better.

The new government has to make sure all of its members remain sqeeky

clean.

Politics all over the world is a mess,it is not about helping the people but

mostly about helping your self.

Not easy i know, the higher up you get the more you need to make concessions.
