PHEU THAI LEADER Chonlanan Srikaew Friday (July 14) confirmed he will still name Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat for prime minister again next Wednesday.

Following Pita’s failure to get adequate support for elected premiership yesterday, the Move Forward leader will be named and voted for prime minister for a second time next Wednesday as scheduled by House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, according to the Pheu Thai leader.

During a joint House/Senate meeting, Pita got 324 yea votes from 311 Move Forward-led coalition MPs and 13 senators with 51 votes short of a minimum of 375 to take the helm of government as required by law.

Nonetheless, Chonlanan expressed concern over the likelihood of Palang Pracharath leader Prawit Wongsuwan being named and successfully voted for prime minister in rivalry against Pita during next Wednesday’s joint House/Senate session.

Anyone die in those 17 years fighting for democracy?

Anyone go to jail in those 17 years fighting for democracy?

Anyone flee the country into forced exile in those 17 years fighting for democracy?

Nobody cares?

More like somebody is clueless.

Clueless ? ... all that, and has anything changed ?

... if you think anything is going to change, then I'm not the one who's clueless ????

How can he get 51 more votes in one week?

The only way would be for some Senators to grow a pair and exercise the will of the people, or feel pressure from the public.

I think you must put him forward one more time, even if he will lose.

There are additional civil and criminal cases (taxes, land sale, sedition and 112 also being floated) just waiting to be filed, so he will be lucky to avoid prison, or be forced to flee the country.

I assume other PM candidates will be similarly "vetted".

If Pita is nominated then I think the opposition will nominate Prawit.

In such a battle I see only one outcome the House will vote Prawit to be PM.

For the Senators it appears MF and Pita stance on S112 is toxic..

MF have to either eliminate the Senators vote by adding another party to the coalition , even if it is against the members wishes. After all none of the existing coalition have agreed to support any amendment of S112

I agree with you - a huge percentage of Thailand's voters care, a lot. They have been quietly simmering since 2014 and if Prawit is elected, it could bring on a new round of violence as seen in May 2010.

The 2014 coup happened half a generation ago. Don't count on the new generation being as apathetic as they were 10 years ago. A new coup might be a bit more problematic for the military as it has been in the past. The Thai population are now extremely well connected through social media - it will make a difference.

The sad reality, proven over and over throughout world history, is that you cannot gain freedom peacefully. "If we want to be free, we must fight". Sacrifices will be necessary.

Violence will be put down, with violence.  Those with the firearms win every time.  Guess you all missed the protests that were put down just couple years ago, and some would suggest, that's why that 'covid/no gathering' rule was in place.

Y'all miss that, along with the vids of water cannon truck, shipping container blockades, and possibly a bit of excess enforcement by authorities.

Not that long ago (July & Oct 2020), protest and that little incident at Thammasat Uni. where students were arrested for 'sedition' for just trying to organize a protest.

And I'm the clueless one ... ????  Oh yea, and nothing changed, just solidified their power.

Oct 6, 1976 or May 1992 ring any bells, or just before the last coup ... people dying in the streets.

Oh yea ... and nothing changed.

I think everybody knows by now that serious street protests are likely to occur if Pita and Move Forward get sidelined.

People have had enough . Things could get very ugly.

Should another coup then occur to ' restore order ' it will wreck Thailands financial standing.

Neither will a minority government with Prawit as PM  be a happy ending a planned by the old school.

I seem to recall, before the election, that a senior military guy said 'coup' is not in our vocabulary? Maybe he was speaking out of turn?

Misleading headline. Not 'named' but 'nominated' in this context.

I doubt that very much.  Nobody really cares.

You had two elected, non career politicians/non generals toss out via coup, nobody cared.

71.75 million here ... so a minute % = nobody cares in my world, or should say, not enough give a sh!t to disrupt their lives for things that simply don't effect them.  Probably more accurate.

Nothing's going change in our life, or most of theirs.  Sadly, that's worldwide in almost all 'established, stable' countries.  Corruption is embedded & rules, whether by ignorance or force or both.

Is Qaddafi still running Lydia?

If not, why not?

Is there still apartheid in South Africa?

If not, why not?

Is Viktor Yanukovych still president of Ukraine?

If not, why not?

Etc., etc., etc…

Solidified their power?

They're barely hanging on.

They’re so weak that they’d gladly accept a Thaksin proxy as Prime Minister.

If it comes to a street battle, the yellows will fold like a $2 deck chair in under five minutes.

It is done, it is over…., all that is left is whether or not the cowards want to be humiliated before they’re tossed out.

So nothing has changed, it appears that one is still very clueless.

Reading comprehension ... "or should say, not enough give a sh!t to disrupt their lives for things that simply don't effect them.  Probably more accurate."

In other countries you mention, apparently enough folks cared, or the powers wanting the change, were organized enough, and had the firepower to force the change they wanted.

Same as all the coups here.  Are they what the people wanted, or just the people with vested interest wanted.  That's a huge difference.

You really think Pita or Prawit as PM will change anything ?

I was wrong.

You are not clueless.

You are clearly a genius.

Operating on a level us mere mortals cannot fathom.

Yes, it would make absolutely zero difference to a single thing if Pita became PM.

This is the very reason why the Senators refuse to vote for Pita - they don’t want some mug who is not going to even lift a finger to upend the status quo.

????????????

Once again, you have contradicted yourself.

The fact that he can't get the votes for PM, shows how little influence he would have as PM.
